Can You Duet? OK, I admit it. I’m a country music fan. The first record I ever bought was Kenny Rogers’ Greatest Hits. During my teen years, I dove into Top 40 and was a huge fan of rock and roll. I enjoyed everything from Chicago to Van Halen. Still, country music remained a true love of mine. That’s why when I heard that a Fredonia native (Ruth Collins) was going to be on CMT’s “Can You Duet” I was excited! She and her singing partner Victoria Gibson make up the group Wild Honey. They’ve got some stiff competition, but I think they can do it — I mean Duet! The show airs new episodes every Friday night at 8 p.m. Here’s my thoughts of the other seven remaining contestants: Catlin Fisher & Will Snyder — They were paired by the judges. Although they’re working together now, there’s still some hesitancy there, particularly from Will. He doesn’t seem like a country music star. Browell and Richey — They had a bad mentoring sessio

Beer Column 2: Getting Into It
Mon, May 19, 2008 @ 2:20PM
Originally ran May 3rd as a part of my monthly beer column that runs the first Saturday of the month You have had a month to think about it and I hope that you have decided to get into beer. To help you along I have compiled a list of tips for you to get into drinking good beer. It can be a hard task with there being so many beers and such a great deal that goes into them. Have The Right Mindset When getting into beer it is really important and sometimes very difficult to have the right mindset. You have to throw away all of your previous ideas of what beer SHOULD be and appreciate what beer is and can be. Do not have the mindset that you are just looking for a beer that tastes good enough to chug or one that gets you really drunk. Good beer is not for that and neither is this column. Keep in mind that all beers are created differently and there are a wide variety of flavors, aromas, textures, and carbonation. Drink It Right I kn

Mass exodus means college is ending
Fri, May 16, 2008 @ 12:34PM
It’s that time of year again. Fredonia State University students are either preparing to head home for the summer or they are participating in commencement ceremonies this weekend at Steele Hall. Our local university, which has an enrollment of about 5,200, has come a long way. Years ago, there was one ceremony for the graduating seniors. In the past five years, however, the classes have become so large that there are now two commencements. Our congrats to the graduates who will be in ceremonies on May17 and thanks for being a part of our wonderful area.

I wouldn't bet on Big Brown
Mon, May 19, 2008 @ 6:10PM
Maybe it's me, but it seems like every year when a sports team has all the hype and is favored to win their respective championship, they always fail. Remember when Gary Payton and Karl Malone joined the Los Angeles Lakers in 2003-04 for their final chance at a ring? They joined a talented team that had Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal (in his prime). Their were role players such as "Big Shot Bob" Robert Horry, Derek Fisher and Devon George. Four future hall of famers on the starting roster made them favorites to win the championship at the beginning of the year. In the end, they were knocked off by the Detroit Pistons in the championship. How about this past season's New England Patriots? Quarterback Tom Brady with receivers like Randy Mos and the resurgent Wes Welker, with Laurence Maroney in the backfield. Defensively, they had Junior Seau, Mike Vrabel and Teddy Bruschi at linebacker with Vince Wilfork and Richard Seymour on the defensive line. Sure they lived up to the hype f

The true obituary of Charlton Heston
Tue, May 20, 2008 @ 11:05AM
Last Friday it was reported that several items Charlton Heston had used in The 10 Commandments will soon go up for auction, another reminder that the film star is no longer with us. The obituaries that filtered through the media in April were certainly honorable, speaking not only of Heston's career but also some lesser-known facts such as his commitment to civil rights. But there was something about them that bothered me: while passing away peacefully at home with your wife by your side is certainly the way I would want to go, for a man like Charlton it just didn't seem quite as fitting. Not quite... Hestonian. So I composed my own "tribute obituary" for the late Mr. Heston: Screen actor and figurative human monolith Charlton Heston died Saturday after a courageous, three-day battle with a mountain lion not far from his Beverly Hills home. Heston died with his wife at his side, cheering him on. She later said that her husband had spotted t

The Great Outdoors... are gone
Tue, May 20, 2008 @ 3:31PM
When did camping stop being camping? After spending three days in Allegheny State Park I expected to come home unshowered and bedraggled with scrapes on my legs, bruises on my elbows and millions of itchy white bumps on my skin (which we all know can only be cured with the x via fingernail method). This is the kind of glorious misery I expect from a camping trip. Instead, I left the wilderness without even a chip in my pink nail polish. Okay, I don’t even wear nail polish but you get the idea. The only aches and pains I had were from sleeping on my cot wrong. That’s right, cot-- with a two inch thick mattress. Refridgerator, electric stove, heating, two bedrooms, kitchen and eating space: that’s the cabin we had for three days of “roughing it.” This is more like renting another apartment. Although my backyard does not qualify as “the great outdoors” it is home to some oversized squirrels that my dog has a love/hate relationship
