CCSBA honors students at annual meeting

The Chautauqua County School Boards Association held its annual meeting and Honors Night at the Williams Center on the SUNY Fredonia Campus on May 17. Raymond J. Fashano, executive director, welcomed the honored students, their families and friends, administrators, staff and school board members from each of the Chautauqua County school districts and the Erie 2 Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES.

The Fredonia High School Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Andrew Bennet, entertained the group with a wonderful selection of music. Mosaic Mercy, a vocal group comprised of students from Forestville Central School and former students of Pine Valley Central School associated with the Forestville Wesleyan Church provided the invocation. Bob Schneider, NYSSBA associate executive director extended greetings on behalf of his organization.

The honor students were recognized by Fashano, assisted by President Sylvester Cleary (Forestville) and 1st Vice President Martha Howard (Silver Creek). The students gave a brief statement about their accomplishments and future plans. Each received a certificate and memento from the CCSBA.

Among the The Honor Students are: Bemus Point: Lauren Hendrick and Lauren Franczak; Brocton: Kasen Jewell and Thomas Johnston; Cassadaga Valley: Kasey Crandall and Sage Frank; Chautauqua Lake: Emily Brown and Taylor Phelps; Clymer: Ashley Beckwith and Emma Wade; Dunkirk: Adrianna Pencek and Joshua Saye; E2CCB Hewes Center: Leah Nowosielski; E2CCB LoGuidice Center: Mackenzie Maines; Falconer: Matthew Eskeli and Elizabeth Becker; Forestville: Jerrod Locke and Trent Hartloff; Fredonia: Matthew Zevenbergen and Caitlyn Cybart; Frewsburg: Caylee Lobb and Cecilia Pearson; Jamestown: Kelly Emerson and Matthew Leon; Panama: Erin Fransen and Kaci Sikora; Pine Valley: Dylan Chase and Samantha Rettig; Sherman: Jacob Martin and Kathryn Pacy; Silver Creek: Brandon Birner and Hannah Boothe; Southwestern: Alyssa Carlson and Megan Powers; and Westfield: Hunter Howes and Joshua Kitchen.

Todd Beckerink from Falconer Central School was the recipient of the Board Member of the Year Award. Dr. Charles Stoddart, associate professor, School Building Leadership and Co-Coordinator of School Building and School District Leadership Programs at SUNY Fredonia, received the Friend of Education Award. The Sherman Central School Board of Education was the recipient of the first School Board Professional Development Award.

Board of Education members leaving service and retiring superintendents were also recognized.

Charles Leichner, superintendent of Cassadaga Valley Central School and president of Far West Council of School Superintendents presented scholarship awards to a student from each participating district.

The recipients are: Bemus Point: Nicholas Snyder; Brocton: Molly Kucharski; Cassadaga Valley: Rylee Bly; Chautauqua Lake: Joseph Parker; Clymer: Ashley Beckwith; Dunkirk: Joshua Saye; E2CCB Hewes Center: Leah Nowosielski; E2CCB LoGuidice Center: Cameron Forster; Falconer: Steven Overend; Forestville: Jerrod Locke; Fredonia: Vince Gullo; Frewsburg: Caylee Lobb; Jamestown: Bradley Brown; Panama: Erin Fransen; Pine Valley: Dylan Chase; Sherman: Kathryn Pacy; Silver Creek: Brandon Birner; Southwestern: Jillian Lawton; and Westfield: Sydnee Abele.

Fashano recognized corporate sponsor representatives in attendance from AXA, Clark Patterson Lee and Young and Wright Architects. He thanked all corporate sponsors for their support.

The CCSBA extends a special thank you to the SUNY Fredonia College of Liberal Arts and Sciences for sponsorship of the evening’s event. Edith Byrne, past president of CCSBA, was recognized for her efforts on creating the slide show of honors students and FWCOSS recipients that was projected throughout the evening.

Election results for the CCSBA Executive Committee and the 2017-18 budget were announced.
