Chautauqua Lake ice industry is Tuesday Club subject
MAYVILLE — Mayville Tuesday Club’s next meeting will welcome Fletcher Ward who will go back in time by telling about the past Chautauqua Lake Ice Industry.
Local author Ward will describe this long-ago industry. He’ll tell how it worked, how long it was utilized and what caused its ending.
The meeting, which is open to visitors, begins at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday Sept. 5 in the 92 S. Erie Street Library. Tickets for a library fund-raising dinner will be available. It will be held Sept. 8 at Webb’s Restaurant.
Dianne Goodrich, Tuesday Club president, noted that donations for the Westfield Memorial Hospital Emergency Department’s renovation fund drive will still be accepted.
The club’s August speaker, introduced by club Vice President Roberta Tenpas, was Patricia Baldwin who described the history and May 2012 grand opening of Lawson Center in Bemus Point. Also vice president of the center, Baldwin noted that although the center’s 1880s building of the boats is not only dedicated to its historical past but, by looking ahead, it has preserved that history for current and future business that also makes its neighbors proud.
