Harvest Day at the Dunkirk Farmers Market

On Wednesday, Sept. 13, the Dunkirk Farmers Market will celebrate an abundant 2017 season with Harvest Day.

Throughout the day, vendors will offer samples of their products for the public to enjoy. Shoppers are invited to enter a free raffle to win the Dunkirk Farmers Market’s Harvest Basket. This prize includes a range of produce, bread, meat, soaps and pierogi from the market’s vendors. Visit the market manager’s green tent to participate.

At 10:30 a.m., local musicians Jack and David Blodgett will offer classic songs from Hank Williams and more. At noon, Stephanie Caputo of Eat Smart NY will offer a cooking demonstration and free samples using fresh seasonal produce. Stella’s Pierogi will offer a hot lunch of pierogi and polish sausage. To create their products, Stella’s uses meat from the Dunkirk Farmers Market’s pasture-raised meat vendor, For Peate’s Sake Homestead.

The Dunkirk Farmers Market takes place every Wednesday through Oct. 11 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The market may extend through the end of October, weather permitting. It is located outside the Dunkirk Senior Center at Ruggles Street and Cliffstar Court, rain or shine. Fresh produce, preserves, nursery plants, honey and/or maple syrup are offered by Feinen Farms, Fred Farms, and Scott’s Farm. Gardens of Eternity offers natural lotions, salves, shampoos and more. Becki’s Bakery offers yeast breads and specialty fruit and nut breads. For Peate’s Sake Homestead offers beef, pork, rabbit, chicken and eggs. They partner with Fred Farms and Becki’s Bakery to offer creative meal deals each week.

The Dunkirk Market accepts EBT/SNAP benefits, WIC and Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program vouchers, WIC VF and Fresh Connect checks. With the Double Up Program, SNAP shoppers can double their SNAP dollars (up to $20) for the purchase of fresh produce. While the Dunkirk Market is no longer distributing Fresh Connect checks, veterans and service members can obtain them from their Division of Veterans Affairs office.

The Dunkirk Farmers Market thanks the Chautauqua County Health Network and Southern Tier West and the Dunkirk Senior Center for their generous support.
