On Saturday, Sept. 23 from 10 a.m. to noon, Greystone Bat, Bird and Butterfly Sanctuary (Greystone Nature Preserve), 8531 Bear Lake Road, Fredonia, will partner with Sarah Sorci of Sweet Flag Herbs to offer a class entitled The Basics of Herbal Tincture Making.

“Alcohol-based tinctures are a convenient way to extract and preserve medicinal plants. Using basic ratios and principles, we can easily make quality herbal remedies at home,” Sorci said.

In this workshop, Sorci will share several methods for tincture making. Participants will sample tinctures made with plants abundant in WNY, including elderberry, hawthorn, burdock root and more. After discussing the unique properties and safe uses of each plant, participants will select an organic dried herb to take home for crafting their own tinctures.

The event will take place indoors. Visitors will meet in the garage classroom at the end of the driveway. For more information and to sign up, contact Sorci at 997-2007 or Sarah@sweetflagherbs.com. Cost is $10, which can be paid in cash or check at the event.

Sorci is a 2014 graduate from the Blue Ridge School of Herbal Medicine. She offers a variety of classes about local medicinal and edible plants, and is an Associate Academy Educator with the Herbal Academy of New England. She also offers herbal medicine and garden consultations. Visit www.sweetflagherbs.com for more information.

Thanks to the support of the Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation, Greystone has added several books to its lending library about identifying, growing, and utilizing medicinal plants. Visitors are invited to borrow these resources. Additional thanks are extended to the Howlett Family Foundation for Little Owls for their generous support.
