ANGOLA – Recently, the Lake Shore Academy of Business and Finance classes of 2018 and 2019 joined over 1,200 other Western New York students at Shea’s Performing Arts Center in Buffalo to attend the 43North Semi-Final Competition where 20 selected finalists gave a five minute sales pitch/presentation detailing their idea for a start-up business. Following the five minute business plan pitch, there was a 10 minute question and answer session. The top ten companies advanced to the finals that evening. SomaDetect, a Canadian dairy processing production company won the grand prize of $1 million to fund their business plan. SomaDetect will receive space downtown at the Buffalo Niagara Medical Center, the business hub for 43North, as well as expert mentorship from the top business leaders of WNY, resources, infrastructure and will do business exempt of New York State taxes for 10 years. Two of the students’ top choices, Squire and Femi Secrets, also won prize money for their start up companies. This year’s event was a wonderful display of entrepreneurial creativity adding to the resurgence of business in Buffalo. It was a great way for students to connect the classroom to the real world.
