Pictured is former Dunkirk Public School District No. 1 Elementary School, which was located on the southwest corner of the Washington Avenue and Fourth Street intersection. The school was built in 1857 for $9,000 and was demolished as part of Dunkirk’s urban renewal project in May, 1971. Classes were last held in the two-story brick building in February 1966. The site is currently the home of Lake Shore Savings Bank offices.
