Pictured is the Hotel Dunkirk prior to its demolition in 1971. Originally known as the Hotel Gratiot and then the Hotel Francis, the building was begun in 1886 with construction completed in 1892. The hotel had 100 rooms, 40 with baths and had a view of Lake Erie until the Masonic Building was constructed some 15 years later. With City Hall and the hotel facing each other and with the principal Central Avenue stop of the Dunkirk-Fredonia streetcar diagonally across from the hotel, the corner of Fourth Street and Central Avenue was for years an important center of activity in Dunkirk.
