VFW district convention begins Friday in Dunkirk

The Veterans of Foreign Wars 6th District convention, honoring Commander Marcello J. Rotunda and President Kathy Warrington, will be held May 20-21 in Dunkirk at the Clarion Hotel.

Marcello J. Rotunda, also known as JR, retired as a chief petty officer in the United States Navy on Sept. 1, 1995 with 24 years of service. He is a graduate of Clymer Central School and entered the Navy on Oct. 27, 1971.

He was assigned various commands. He was sent to Great Lakes, Ill. as a seaman recruit; Hawthorne, Nev., USS Midway CVA-41 and was on board where he spent 11 months off the coast of Vietnam; USS George K. Mackenzie (DD-836) Beach Master unit one; Naval Air Station, Milton, Fla.; Navfac Keflavik, Iceland; USS Okinawa (LPH-3) Naval Reserve Center, Adelphi, Md.; USS Alamos (AFDB-7), Holy Lock, Scotland; Fleet Training Command Guantanamo Bay Cuba; Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, Philadelphia, Pa. as chief petty officer (E-7).

Rotunda received many awards and qualified for two breast insignia enlisted surface warfare pins on the USS Sampson and an Air Warfare pin on the USS Enterprise.

He joined the Veterans of Foreign Wars in May 1977, joining Post 6764 in Westfield. He then transfered to Jamestown John W. Tiffany Post 53 and served as commander many times. He has held a variety of appointments at post, county district, Department of New York and at national levels.

He resides in Jamestown with Beth Ecker and recently retired from Inscape Architectural Interiors.

Warrington is District 6 president for the VFW. She has been a member since 1988 and joined under her father, Robert Browning Sr., who served in the Korean War from 1952-1956.

She served as president of the Wm. R. Dill Post 199 until it closed and transfered to Eden Memorial Post 8265. She has been married to Donal Warrington for 28 years and they have three children: Michael (Kristie) Reynolds, Joseph (Deanna) Reynolds and Crystal (Jack) Reynolds and have six grandchildren. She also has four brothers and two sisters.

Rotunda and Kathy’s The district convention will be honoring Rotunda and Warrington for all the work they have done this past year. On Saturday, May 21 memorial services will be held at the Clarion, followed by a meeting and a dinner.
