NCCS religion class takes on challenging end-of-year projects

Danielle Long’s eighth grade religion class was given a challenge as an end-of-the-year project. The class had been studying about Catholic social teaching, and Pope Francis’ call for all to reach out to the poor of the world. This “preferential options for the poor” became the basis for the eighth grade challenge.

The class formed four small groups and each was asked to research particular non-profit organizations that helped the poor. The students made personal contacts to find out the specific needs of the group they chose.

One group went to Walmart and accepted donations for the WNY Food Bank. The students returned the donors’ generosity with ice cold lemonade. A second group held a bake sale in the school gym. Their profits went to help Rural Ministry with its many needs, such as their Emergency Food Pantry.

Another group realized there was a great need for used clothing. They contacted St. Luke’s Mission of Mercy in Buffalo and also the local Salvation Army. They collected the clothes and delivered them.

Long emphasized that it is important to see the needs of the poor and become involved in social action on a personal level. We are all called to serve one another as Jesus commanded. The school’s motto is “Living and learning in Christ’s image.” This successful end of the year project encouraged the students to do just that.
