DHS sets community education sessions

The Dunkirk High School has released information regarding the schedule of community education sessions for the next several months. Sessions include:

Hall Walking

Jan. 4 to April 29

Need a place to fitness walk? Dunkirk High School hallways are perfect. Sign-up provides unlimited access Monday through Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. All that is needed is a pair of walking shoes. Participants need to sign in and sign out every evening at the Fitness Center and are asked to wear a name tag for identification. The cost is $5.

5 Hour Pre-Licensing Course

This is the 5-hour (in class, NOT in car) driver program course that is needed to get a license. Potential drivers need to complete this course before they can take a road test. Minimum 10 and maximum 36.

Registration hours are 8 to 3:30 p.m.

CASH ONLY – MUST BRING PERMIT WITH PAYMENT

January Session: Tuesday 10 and Wednesday 11

February Session: Tuesday 14 and Wednesday 15

March Session: Tuesday 14 and Wednesday 15

April Session: Tuesday 4 and Wednesday 5

May Session: Tuesday 16 and Wednesday 17

June Session: Tuesday 6 and Wednesday 7

Learn To Swim Program

Classes for the following age groups:  Guppies (beginners), Minnows, Fish, Sharks and Dolphins (advanced).

Classes will take place on Saturday mornings, in three sessions, beginning on Feb. 25 and ending on May 13.  (No classes on April 15 or April 22)

Session 1: 9 to 9:45 a.m., will include the following classes: Guppies, Minnows, Fish, Sharks and Dolphins

Session 2: 10 to 10:45 a.m., will include the following classes: Guppies, Minnows, Fish, Sharks and Dolphins

Session 3: 11 to 11:45 a.m., will include the following classes: Infant-Parent Course (IPAP) and Flying Fish (Diving)

Registration will be on Friday, Feb. 17 at the pool lobby from 4 to 5:30 p.m. for Dunkirk residents and  5:30 to 7 p.m. for all others.

Dunkirk residents: first child:$35, second child: $30 and each additional: $25.

Non-Dunkirk residents: first child:$40, second child: $35 and each additional: $30.

Adult League  Indoor Volleyball

Come play co-ed indoor volleyball. Tuesdays and Thursdays: 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., DHS Auxiliary Gym. Enter the back lot off Lucas Avenue by the tennis courts. Cost:  $3 per night or $40 for all classes.

Dates: Jan. 19,  Jan. 24, Jan. 26,  Jan. 31, Feb. 2,  Feb. 7,  Feb. 9,  Feb. 14,  Feb. 16,  Feb. 21,  Feb. 23,  Feb. 28 and March 2.

Winter Swim Programs

Morning Lap Swim is a program for adults and competitive swimmers who wish to swim laps for exercise.  This program will run on Monday and Wednesday mornings from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. The program will begin Jan. 4 and will end April 5.  The cost for this program will be $2 per session. No class Jan. 16 or Feb. 20.

Aquasize is a no impact aerobic exercise for adults. These classes will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. This class will begin Jan. 4  and will end  April 5. The cost will be $4 per class. No class Jan. 16 or Feb. 20.

Evening Lap Swim is a program for adults and competitive swimmers who wish to swim laps for exercise.  This program will run on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The program will begin Jan. 3 and will end April 6. The cost is $2 per session.

Deep Water Aquasize is a no impact, high aerobic exercise for adults. This takes place in the diving well.  These classes will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. This class will begin Jan. 3 and will end April 6. The cost for these classes will be $4 per class.

Family Open Swim will be held on Friday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m. It will begin on Jan. 6 and will end April 7 (No class on Jan. 27). Children under 11 must be accompanied by an adult. This program is limited to 60 swimmers. The cost is $2 per person.

Technique & Endurance is a new program based on the requests of program swimmers and community. It is designed for young swimmers who are in the fish, sharks or dolphin classes to come in and fine tune their swimming skills. Also, adults interested in advancing their swimming abilities are encouraged to attend. The sessions will be run in group-instruction format with DHS swim instructors. This is not a learn to swim session or open swim. Classes will be held on Fridays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Class will begin on Jan. 6 and end on April 7 (No Class on Jan. 27). The cost is $4 per swimmer.

No food or drink in the pool, balcony or locker room area allowed.

Outside pool toys, athletic equipment, balls, noodles are prohibited.

Beginner Level Yoga

This class will help to build strength, increase flexibility, and find focus. Yoga will be taught in a dynamic Vinyasa series, meaning breath is linked to movement, and is moderately paced. Participants will learn the fundamental yoga postures and principles. There will be options to modify each workout making it more simple or difficult.  Set to music, this class will stretch and relax the participants’ entire bodies and minds. This class is ideal for anyone new to yoga or interested in its benefits. Participants need to bring their own mats.

Tuesdays and Thursdays: 6 to 7 p.m. in the High School Cafeteria.

Cost: $7 per class or $95 for all the classes. Remaining classes Jan. 24, Jan. 26, Jan. 31, Feb. 2, Feb. 7, Feb. 9, Feb. 14, Feb. 16, Feb. 21, Feb. 23, Feb. 28 and March 2.

DHS Fitness Center – Dunkirk City School District  residents only

Come get in shape in this state of the art fitness center. Offerings include cardio equipment, free weights, cable machines and strength training machines.

Hours:  Monday through Friday from  5 to 8 p.m.; Saturday 9 a.m. to noon.

Cost: $20 per month, $15 per month if paid six months in advance, $10 per month if paid one year in advance

Senior citizens (55 and over): $5 per month.

Social Dancing: Argentine Tango

Argentine Tango is a partner dance. Participants will learn and practice the fundamental elements including:  posture, leading and following, walking steps and turns. Emphasis will be placed on rhythm and musicality of movement. Couples and singles are welcome; no prior dance experience is needed. Socks or dance shoes may be worn.

Cost: $5 per class  or $32 for the entire session (8 weeks).

Tuesdays:  6:30 to 8 p.m. High School Cafeteria

Jan. 17 to March 7.

American Red Cross Babysitting Course

This babysitting course provides the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and responsibly care for infants and children up to the age of 10, as well as to manage a babysitting business. This class will be held in the High School Room 117.

Cost:  $40 (covers American Red Cross certification)

Date:  Jan.  21 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Bring a lunch.

Crochet Class

Beginner, intermediate and advanced crocheters welcome. The class starts with an orientation class where everyone will be given the opportunity to pick a project they would like to try to make. The instructor will then help everyone make a list of the materials they will need to complete that project and then will do the very best to help each person complete that project and have fun learning to crochet or enhance the skills that they already have.

Tuesdays and Thursdays:  6 to 7 p.m. in High School Room 204

Cost:  $6 per class or $45 for the entire session

Dates: Jan. 17, Jan. 19, Jan. 24, Jan. 26, Jan. 31, Feb. 2, Feb. 7 and Feb. 9.
