Cassadaga Legion Auxiliary reviews and plans

CASSADAGA — The Cassadaga Legion Auxiliary held its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 14 with nine members attending; including five officers. The meeting was opened with the Pledge of Allegiance, the Auxiliary preamble, and a moment of silence for fallen soldiers. Opening prayer was given by Chaplain Paula Pattison. President Bev Speelberg called the meeting to order.

The treasurer’s report was given by Sue DeGolier, and in the absence of Secretary Carol Baker, the minutes from the previous meeting were read by Pattison. Both were accepted as read. Correspondence was read by Pattison.

Post 1280 Legionnaire Dan Bartkowski was unable to attend this meeting, so he submitted a report to the Unit members detailing the results of the Legion’s participation in the Cassadaga Winter Festival that was held in early February. His report stated that the Legion’s portion of the festival, which included hosting a corn-hole tournament and a dance was a great success. He thanked Unit 1280 for the cookies they made and donated to the event, as well as their time selling tickets, serving food and helping clean up!

Speelberg gave her report on the Mid-Winter Conference that was held in Albany on Jan. 20 and 21. She stated that it was very interesting. Department President Deborah Kryczkowski has selected “The Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors” as her project. The department president reported that proceeds from the sale of the book, “Klinger — A story of Honor & Hope” by Betsy Beard will be donated to this program, which will help non-legally responsible survivors of deceased military.

“Klinger, A Story of Honor and Hope” is the endearing story of a young horse dreaming of fame as a racehorse but his life is disrupted and he must leave his parents to start a new life. Faced with difficulty and disappointment, Klinger’s dream of significance seems unattainable. He then discovers fulfillment in honoring fallen heroes and bringing comfort to their families. This book is based on the story of a real horse that works in Arlington National Cemetery.

Unit 1280 discussed this project and it was tabled until further information is received and reviewed.

Chaplain Pattison reported one Unit 1280 member deceased, and she has sent out numerous get well cards to members of this Legion family.

Children and Youth Chairperson Pat Hayward and her committee are in the planning stages for the children’s Easter Party set for Sunday, April 2 from 1 to 3 p.m. in Post 1280’s back hall.

The poppy chairperson is reminding everyone that “Poppy Days” are just around the corner and she will be looking for help with this worthy cause!

It was also mentioned that it is time to prepare for the annual rummage sale. Organizers are checking dates in May and a date will be set at the March meeting. All who start their spring cleaning are asked to remember the upcoming sale!

The Auxiliary still has “Green Lights for Veterans” for sale. Get one today and let the green lights shine through the night to show support for veterans everywhere.

Unit 1280’s next meeting will be Tuesday, March 14 at 6:30 pm, at the Post. Auxiliary members are asked to please plan to attend. Everyone’s help is needed to further the commitment to fulfill projects to benefit the American Legion and veterans. New members and new ideas are always welcome. With no other business at hand, the meeting was closed at 7:45 p.m.

Unit 1280 continues to collect coupons for overseas families; “Labels for Education;” “Pennies for Hospice;” can tabs and cancelled postage stamps. Unit 1280 also sells corn brooms for $10; anyone interested may call the Post at 595-3145.
