Memorial Unit 62 elects officers

A meeting of Dunkirk Memorial Unit 62 was called to order by President Audrey Miga on Tuesday, May 9 at 7 p.m. Chaplain Lucinda Simpson read the opening prayer. The Pledge of Allegiance and Preamble to the Constitution were led by Miga and recited by those in attendance.

Secretary Jean Sutton read the minutes from the April 11 meeting which were approved as read. Treasurer Kyle Ahlstrom gave the financial report, which was approved and filed for audit.

Miga reported that the Chautauqua County Auxiliary monthly meeting and Memorial service was held on May 11 at the Post. The Legionnaires cooked and served dinner. Poppy-decorated cupcakes were provided by Auxiliary members Karen Jaquith and Ann Glapa for dessert. Volunteers are needed for the annual Post 62 Memorial Day chicken barbecue. Silent auction items can be dropped off at the Post.

Committee reports were then given. Dawn Ransom reported that membership is at 133 members. Unit 62 has met its 100 percent goal. Current unpaid members are urged to renew and new members are welcome to join. Pat Kibbe reported on Americanism and recorded hours for members who flew flags, recited the Pledge of Allegiance, volunteered, and voted in the election. Janet Jagoda reported that Poppy Days are May 26-28 and will be distributed at Tops and Save A Lot. A letter was also sent to Dunkirk Mayor Wilfred Rosas declaring National Poppy Day in the city. Chaplain Lucinda Simpson sent sympathy cards to Al and Wanda Poweski, Dave and Janet Jagoda, and Walter and Del Jusko for deceased family members. Miga reported that junior auxiliary member Elizabeth Bumpus will be participating in the County Auxiliary monthly meeting on Thursday and will be reading the POW/MIA remembrance. She will also conduct a future auxiliary meeting. Ahlstrom reported that Girls State orientation is May 20 at Fredonia Memorial Post 59 and will notify representative Samantha Moser.

Sutton read the following communications: The 97th Convention Call of the American Legion Auxiliary Department of New York will be held in Syracuse on July 20-22. Delegates to the convention will be Miga and First Vice President Ransom.

A list of current expenses for Post 62 repairs from the Post adjutant was read to the Auxiliary for their consideration. A motion was made and passed to donate funds from the silent auction for the building repairs. Discussion was also held to donate additional funds for the Post security system depending on the cost. The motion was tabled until an estimate is received.

Elected as officers for 2017-18 were: President Audrey Miga, First Vice President Dawn Ransom, Second Vice President Janet Jagoda, Secretary Pat Ambrose, Treasurer Kyle Ahlstrom, Chaplain Lucinda Simpson, Historian Pat Kibbe, and Sgt. At Arms Martha Edwards. The Executive Committee will include Del Jusko, Linda Cobb, and Pat Kibbe. The installation will be held with the Post sometime in June with the date to be determined by the commander.

Announcements include The Annual Post 62 Memorial Day chicken barbecue will be held on Monday beginning at noon, following the parade. Auxiliary members will be hosting a silent auction to benefit building repairs for Post 62. Presale tickets for the dinner are available at the Post for $10.

The American Legion county convention will be held at Post 62 on Saturday, June 3 at 1 p.m. The Auxiliary will be providing a lunch menu for those attending.

The next Unit meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 13 at 7 p.m.

The closing prayer was offered by Simpson and the meeting adjourned.
