NCCA holds last meeting until fall

The Northern Chautauqua Clubs Associates recently held their last regular meeting of the season at the World War II Veterans Club in Dunkirk. Cas “Butch” Piglowski welcomed the group to his club.

The meeting was opened with the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a moment of silence for deceased members of the clubs, especially remembering deceased veterans.

Roll call of officers was taken, two trustees were excused, and roll call of clubs was completed.

Minutes of the previous meeting were read by secretary Jim Pryll, and a financial report was given by treasurer Tom Halicki. Motions were made and seconded to approve both.

Under old business, discussion was held on avoiding conflicts of scheduling when it comes to club events, especially meat parties. Member clubs are asked to announce their dates well in advance so that conflicts can be avoided.

Under new business, president Joe Rozen reported on a meeting held by the NYS Gaming Commission concerning changes to gaming laws proposed by Governor Cuomo. He and Tom Halicki attended a public forum held at the NYS Lottery Service Center in Buffalo on May 10. There were at least 100 concerned people present from various organizations in western New York, including clubs, churches, non- profit groups, and fire departments.

Much of the discussion was about bingo games, including using computerized boards, and raising the total amounts of prize money. Some new provisions of the law are scheduled to take effect on July 9 of this year.

The biggest complaint was lack of communication between the Gaming Commission and the organizations. It was noted that all announcements are posted on their website and should be consulted now and then. However, the announcements of adopted provisions are listed on the NYS Budget web site.

This upset many of the participants citing that they should be notified of any changes by mail by the commission. Many were upset that they knew nothing of the forum and found out by word of mouth from other organizations, rather than official notification.

The Commissioner was very receptive to testimonies given, and promised all input will be reviewed by the Commission.

The next meeting of the Associates will held in the fall, on Sept. 24 at the Sheridan VFW. Clubs will be notified of any special meetings if they are necessary.

The meeting was adjourned will wishes for a great summer for all.
