Bud ‘n Bloom Garden Club takes road trip

DERBY — The Bud ‘n Bloom Garden Club recently took a tour of the Frank Lloyd Wright Graycliff estate and the Martin House.

Members were treated to the view of the lake afforded by the placement of the house as guests walk down the pathway to the entrance. At the approach there is an echo of the lake in the natural shape of the landscaped pond surrounded by native stones.

Inside and out there are cantilevered elements reflecting the layer of sandstone traversing the 60 foot shale cliff. This limestone erodes more slowly and therefore extends beyond the shale, the docent explained.

The more than two-hour tour was filled with illuminating explanations of the bold and subtle details all designed to further Wright’s vision of a structure growing organically out of the site.

This engrossing tour followed lunch and a monthly meeting at Pasquale’s Restaurant. The Sept. 14 meeting will be held at 4 p.m. at Penny Deakin’s.
