Silver Creek offers swimming, yoga and more to enhance district residents’ wellness

SILVER CREEK — Several health and fitness opportunities are being offered to residents of the Silver Creek Central School District through its Community Education division’s Winter/Spring 2018 session. Yoga, Meditation & Compassion: Rise beyond and glide through. Have you always wished to rise above your most inspiring dreams? Do you desire to glide through life with joy, strength and courage? Included in this class eight fold paths/Ashtanga, Ahinsa (no violence), Sastya (truth). Gain an understanding of the Chakras, Asanas, Karmic and Niyama Yoga. All ages, talents and abilities are welcome. The session runs for 6 classes on Mondays from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. from Feb. 26 to April 9 in Room 415/Elementary chorus room. Registration fee is $30 and the instructor is Sondra Holland, a meditation devotee who has spent many long times studying in the Orient. Her dream is to unite ancient Eastern teachings with peaceful western practices.

Sit and Fit: All ages can benefit from this light and easy class, which will include simple chair exercises and stretching. We will include the use of stretch bands and light weights if you choose to bring this equipment to class with you. Some meditation will conclude the class. Have fun while you stay fit. The session runs 20 classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. from April 10 through June 14, in the high school library. Registration fee is $40 and the instructor is Betty Bates.

Mommy/Daddy & Me Swim: Looking to get your child ready for the water this summer? This course, geared toward parents with children ages birth through and including preschool, will help you do that. You will be shown how to: Make your child feel comfortable in the water; properly supervise children and maintain safe behavior in and around the water; enter and exit the water with a child; establish – and strictly enforce – a rule that a child must get adult permission before entering the water; use holding and supporting techniques and when to use them; demonstrate your child’s readiness to try basic skills; proper submersion techniques; help children learn and practice skills appropriate for their age, level and ability; play and the importance of play as a way to learn. Older siblings are welcome to come as helpers for no extra charge.

Swim pants must be worn for infants and toddlers not yet potty trained. The class meets for 6 classes on Wednesdays from 4 to 4:30 p.m. from May 2 to June 6. Certified swim instructor is Jean Mahaney and the registration fee is $25 for one child or two children for $40.

Walking the Halls: There is no pre-registration for the walking program held Monday to Thursday from 3:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. There is a sign-up sheet in the high school lobby. Participants are asked to carry photo ID when walking.

Send in money promptly with the registration form and fees; include separate check for each person. Checks or money orders can be made out to Silver Creek CS Community Ed. Those 65 and older get a 15 percent discount.
