Submitted Photo Cassadaga Legion Auxiliary President Pat Hayward presents Maddie Hilliker with her Emergency Preparedness Certificate.

CASSADAGA — The Cassadaga Legion Auxiliary held its April meeting on Tuesday, April 10 with 15 members attending, including seven officers and one junior member. President Pat Hayward opened the meeting in regular fashion with the Pledge of Allegiance, the Auxiliary Preamble, and a moment of silence for our fallen soldiers. Chaplain Paula Pattison gave the opening prayer. Secretary Carol Baker read the minutes of the previous meeting; Treasurer Sue DeGolier gave her report, and both were accepted as read. Correspondence was read by the secretary.

Guest County President June Whipple joined the Unit for the evening. She gave a short talk on the happenings with the County Auxiliary.

Hayward then introduced the newest junior member, Maddie Hilliker. Hilliker was welcomed into the Unit and presented a certificate for her learning to be prepared for emergencies.

Committee reports were as follows:

Chaplain Pattison reported Unit 1280 sent out two get well cards in the past month.

For Children & Youth, Hayward reported that due to no chairperson for Children & Youth, the annual children’s Easter party will not be held this year.

For Empire Girls State, Unit 1280 will be sponsoring Gracelyn Camarata from Falconer Unit 638. She and other young ladies from around New York State will spend a week in late June at SUNY Brockport to learn of our state’s government. It was noted that the mandatory Girls State orientation will be held at Unit 59, Fredonia, Saturday May 5.

Membership is at about 88 percent for the year. The chairperson is still accepting 2018 dues!

The 2018 Poppies have been received. Chairperson Baker reported that she is getting ready for “Poppy Days” in May. Next month she will have the poppy distribution sign-up sheets ready. She also made three poppy decorations that will be sent to 8th District Auxiliary for judging.

Under old business, plans were finalized for the annual Rummage/Bake Sale to be held Saturday May 19 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Members will be accepting donations from Sunday, May 13 to Friday, May 18. The Auxiliary is unable to accept electronics, encyclopedias, or exercise equipment. Keep this group in mind when spring cleaning out closets and drawers; one person’s “trash” can be someone else’s treasure!

Under new business: Legion 1280 Adjutant Cindy Bartkowski spoke to the Unit about the Post 1280’s “Tired of Winter Party” to be held Saturday, April 21 from 5 to 11 p.m. All are welcome! There is a $12 charge at the door that includes a buffet dinner, door prizes, DJ and Karaoke. For information, call 595-3145.

Unit 1280 will be assisting the Scout Pack & Troop 219’s food collection on Saturday, April 28 to benefit the local food pantries. Workers will be at the Cassadaga Shur-Fine and the four corners in Cassadaga accepting non-perishable food or monetary donations.

Members present voted to donate money to the Shriners’ October fundraiser featuring Terry Buchwald at Post 1280; and to the “They Marched for Us, Let’s March for Them” Walk-a-Thon at the CVCS track on Saturday, April 21. All proceeds to benefit veterans.

Hayward reminded the Unit members that the next County Auxiliary meeting will be Thursday, May 10 at Lakewood Unit 1286. This will be the County Auxiliary’s Memorial Service to remember and honor fellow Auxiliary members that have passed away this year.

With no other business or discussions at hand, Pattison gave the closing prayer and Hayward closed the meeting at 8:05 p.m. Unit 1280’s next meeting will be Tuesday, May 8 at 6:30 p.m. There will be election of the 2018-2019 officers at this meeting. All Unit members are encouraged to attend; the group can always use everyone’s new, great ideas to further our commitment to our Veterans!

Unit 1280 has nice corn brooms for sale at $10 each and they continue to collect “Pennies for Hospice,” “can tabs for Troop support” and “Box Tops for Education.”
