Villenova Cemetery clean up is Saturday

SOUTH DAYTON — The Villenova Burial Association has set Saturday at 10 a.m. as Spring Cleanup Day at the Villenova Cemetery on Cemetery Road. Volunteers will be raking, trimming and picking up tree branches and trash, etc. to get the cemetery ready for mowing season. Wear gloves, bring rakes and trimmers, and join for an hour or two to spruce up this local cemetery. Anyone is welcome to help — doughnuts will be provided! For further information, call 988-5972 or Judy at 988-7727.

The winter’s heavy snow and strong winds have caused a lot of tree damage this year. Many fir boughs litter the cemetery grounds and need to be cut up and disposed. Volunteers, equipment and gravel are needed to scrape and gravel the cemetery roads.

Lot owners and their families are reminded they are responsible for maintaining their monuments, no marble chips around monuments and trees and shrubs are not allowed to be planted in the cemetery. If, in the past, shrubs or a tree were planted on your family member’s lot, consider removing them this spring. Cedars, yews, rhododendrons, lilacs and evergreen trees grow quite large and can cause serious problems in the cemetery years later. Trees and shrubs encroach on neighboring lots. Their branches can break and damage monuments. Their root systems interfere with burials, mowing and heave foundations causing monuments to lean or tip over.

One other notice includes unpaid lot holds and partial payments are not allowed by the Villenova Burial Association. Lots in Villenova Cemetery must be purchased to obtain rights to a casket or cremains interment in a particular lot, otherwise the lot(s) can be sold to someone else. Contact Treasurer Jenny Dye directly at 988-3501.
