WACS to perform ‘Into the Woods’
WESTFIELD — Westfield Academy and Central School will present “Into the Woods,” music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, book by James Lapine on March 24 and 25 at 7:30 p.m. in the Westfield District Auditorium. “Into the Woods” is an exciting musical that interweaves several fairy-tales to create a musical that portrays some of the basic struggles that all human-beings share.
Cinderella (Grace Bodenmiller), Little Red Riding Hood (Kailyn Gatto), Jack (of beanstalk fame) (Luke Stephenson), Rapunzel (Lindsey Songer) and a baker (Jordan Jimenez) and his wife (Brittany Whitcomb) set off into the woods to get their wishes in the first act, but in the second act must learn to act together to rid their land from a giant. They are sometimes advised, sometimes goaded into action, and sometimes just plain annoyed by the local witch (Alaina Cockram). Sondheim’s show is known for its beautiful, sometimes humorous, and sometimes poignant music that makes the characters come to life. The production features around 70 Westfield High School students and represents many months of hard work.
“‘Into the Woods’ is one of my all-time favorite musicals. It has a great story, great music, and it teaches many important lessons. Moreover, it’s just great entertainment. We’ve had so many community volunteers, clinics from voice professor at SUNY-Fredonia, Daniel Ihasz, as well as several theater majors from Fredonia who have worked with our cast. I hoping it will be one of our finest productions to date” Director Kent Knappenberger said.
“Into the Woods” features the talents of Hyla Stellhorn, of the Chautauqua Theater Company, and Westfield resident, in her stunning set design as well as a team of parents who designed over 60 costumes for the show. The pit orchestra will be directed by Helen Ihasz and choreography is by Emma Bishop.
Tickets are available by calling 326-2151 or they may be purchased online by folling the link on the Westfield and Academy Central School website. “Into the Woods” is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International.
