RTPI to host prestigious ‘Birds in Art’ exhibition

JAMESTOWN — The Roger Tory Peterson Institute is now presenting “Birds in Art.”

Varied, mesmerizing perspectives and artistic insights into avian life are featured in the 41st annual “Birds in Art” exhibition. Artwork marvels incorporating vivid colors, remarkable compositions, and striking poses — from whimsical to regal — by some of the world’s most talented artists comprise this year’s “Birds in Art” show.

RTPI will feature this exhibition through Aug. 27.

Artists strive to be chosen for the internationally renowned “Birds in Art,” organized annually by the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum in Wausau, Wisconsin. Whether through woodcuts, bronze or cut paper and feathers, “Birds in Art” artists highlight wide-ranging aspects of avian life through fresh perspectives, varied mediums, and thought-provoking themes.

Each fall at the Woodson Art Museum, the “Birds in Art” exhibition presents original paintings, sculptures and graphics created within the last three years by artists from the world over. More than 500 artists annually — 581 in 2016 — submit their work for consideration by a jury of three professionals who winnow the field to about 100 works. The 2016 jurors were Mindy Moak, principal of MME Fine Arts, New York City; Michael Panhorst, curator of art at the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, Alabama; and Graeme Reid, director of collections and exhibitions at the Museum of Wisconsin Art, West Bend.

The subsequent “Birds in Art” touring exhibition, which comprises 60 artworks from the annual exhibition, travels to locations throughout the country. The 2016 tour venues are: Museum of York County, Rock Hill, South Carolina, Dec. 17, 2016 to April 9, 2017; Wichita Falls Museum of Art, Midwestern State University, Wichita Falls, Texas, April 28 to June 25, 2017; Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History, Jamestown, N.Y., July 15 to Aug. 27; Rockport Center for the Arts, Rockport, Texas, Sept. 15 to Nov. 18; Fullerton Arboretum, Fullerton, California, Dec. 8, 2017 to Jan. 25, 2018.
