SUNY Fredonia to host musical event May 6

The State University of New York at Fredonia School of Music is hosting “Harp Day” on Sunday, May 6, from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., in Mason Hall on campus.

The deadline for registration is this Friday, April 6, and can be made online at http://home.fredonia.edu/music/community/fredonia-harp-day. The event cost for musicians is $25, which includes lunch and a T-shirt. Extra lunches for non-participating companions are $12.

The event is described as a “no-stress, informal event” open to harpists of any age and any level. Musicians are invited to bring their harp for a day filled with ensemble rehearsals, camaraderie, and a recital by American Harp Society National Competition winner Natalie Severson made possible by the Winners Outreach program of the American Harp Society.

The event is co-hosted by School of Music harp instructor Sonja Inglefield and Buffalo Suzuki Strings harp instructor Kela Walton.

All activities will take place at the Fredonia School of Music. Mason Hall is a harp-friendly building with plenty of handicap access. There will be several harpists available to help with moving and tuning. Music stands and chairs will be provided. If a musician prefers to use a bench, they are asked to bring one along with their harp, music and a tuning key.

Activities, to begin at 9 a.m., will include harp ensemble rehearsals, the above-mentioned recital, and a free grand finale ensemble performance for family and friends at 4 p.m.

Upon registration, participants will receive an email with the repertoire list — a collection of fun harp ensemble dances including the ever popular “Triptic Dance” and the rousing “Polka in C!” and will be asked to learn as many or as few of the pieces as they’d like. They also may choose whichever ensemble part they find most comfortable. Musicians can play both hands or only one hand — no pressure
