Visiting Writer Series welcomes author Anne Valente
The State University of New York at Fredonia Department of English and Mary Louise White (MLW) Visiting Writer series will host Anne Valente, author of the novel “Our Hearts Will Burn Us Down” and the story collection “By Light We Knew Our Names.”
A craft talk will be given on Monday, Nov. 12 at 5 p.m., and there will be a reading on Tuesday, Nov. 13, at 5 p.m. Both events will be held in McEwen Hall Room 209 and are free and open to the public.
Writers are brought to campus every fall and spring semester by the MLW Visiting Writer series to give a craft talk and reading. The series is sponsored by the Department of English and Mary Louise White Fund of the Fredonia College Foundation.
Creative Writing Lecturer Eric Schlich said all students interested in reading and writing should attend the events. He believes students don’t have to be a English majors to appreciate Ms. Valente’s story-telling talents. “Her novel, ‘Our Hearts Will Burn Us Down,’ is a stunning work of magical realism that explores the aftermath of a school shooting. And the stories in ‘By Light We Knew Our Names’ are equally magical and tragic,” Mr. Schlich noted.
He added that attendees will not only learn about her writing techniques from her craft talk and hear an excerpt of her work, they will also have the opportunity to purchase her books and have her sign them at the reception following the talk.
