Marsh Memorial Advent Recital planned for Dec. 21

The First United Presbyterian Church of Dunkirk, located at 19 W. Fourth St., will present the third in a series of three weekly Marsh Memorial Advent Recitals for 2016. On Wednesday, Dec. 21, at noon in the church sanctuary, Dr. Linda Phillips and Dr. JiHyun Woo will perform.

Dr. Linda Phillips is a performing pianist as an accompanist in Western New York. A faculty member of the Fredonia School of Music at State University of New York, she teaches piano, African American Music and History of Jazz and is coordinator of the class piano program. Her History of Jazz radio course was previously broadcast throughout Chautauqua County. Dr. Phillips received the doctorate of musical arts in piano performance and has taught at SUNY Fredonia since 1974, having previously taught at Western Michigan University and The Ohio State University. A former member of the Board of Directors of the National Association of African American Studies, she has presented numerous papers at the National Conference. She is an Associate of The Center for Black Music Research, has served as Vice-President for the Fredonia chapter of Pi Kappa Lambda Music Honorary and currently serves as advisor to the Fredonia Jazz Ensemble, Vocal Point and the Gospel Choir.

Dr. JiHyun Woo is a native of Seoul, Korea. She earned a PhD in Music Theory from the University of Buffalo, where she also completed three master’s degrees, in music theory, composition, and organ. As an active composer, her pieces have been performed in venues across Western New York and throughout Asia. Recently her composition, Buffalo and Me (2002) was performed at the College Music Society International Conference in Seoul and Kyeong Ju, Korea (2011). Dr. Woo is an active performer and regularly performs recitals at the First United Presbyterian Church in Dunkirk, where she serves as the Music Director and organist.

The Marsh Memorial Advent Recital Series is presented as a traditional program begun in 1978, under the direction of First United Presbyterian Church of Dunkirk’s Organist and Musical Director Howard Marsh.

This free musical program is designed to provide members of the church community and the general public with an opportunity for a period of peaceful reflection and contemplation during the hour at mid-week throughout the Advent season.
