Reformation made a lasting impact on America

The 500th anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation will be celebrated on Oct. 30, 2017.

Martin Luther’s stand on scripture has had lasting effects that has now reach its 500th anniversary. His work has inspired many people. Most of them who we would name would have been his contemporaries. Yet there is one conspicuous name of our more modern times I want to mention.

In 1934, a Baptist preacher traveled to Germany. His name was Michael King. He was so inspired by Martin Luther that he then changed his name and his 5-year-old son’s name. That son now has his own place in history as he has become an inspiration for those seeking to reform our society.

Other than sharing names, being preachers, and willing to stand up for their visions, I don’t know if they had anything else in common. But the point is, standing up for what is right is what is important. It is not easy. It can be quite costly. It may even go unrecognized in history. Yet it can be an inspiration to others; be it for a short term or the long run.

Our greatest inspiration is the One who is the focus of our Reformation celebration. He not only stood up for what is right He has made the wrongs right. In Him we have that promise, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28). He is the one who used Martin Luther to reform His church. He is the one who still uses people today to influence and correct the wrongs in our world. That One, our Lord Jesus Christ, the very Son of God is what our Reformation Celebration is all about.
