Local teens win international Bible quiz competition

Six local teens competed at the C&MA International Bible Quizzing competition held at Crown College in St. Bonifacius, Minnesota on July 11 through July 14. The competition was comprised of all star teams from districts throughout the U.S. and Canada. The local teens qualified by placing in the top ten at a regional district quiz in zones throughout Western and Central New York. These ten were then placed onto two separate district teams representing the Northeastern District of the C&MA.

After 12 preliminary rounds of quizzing, both teams placed in the top six and locked in their positions for the championship round where only the top nine teams move on. These teams then competed until only three teams remained via the elimination rounds. Northeastern 1 was able to fight their way into the finals and competed against the Western Canada District and Canadian Midwest District. In the finals, Northeastern 1 had their best two quizzes of the entire meet when it counted most and was able to capture first place. Four of the five quizzers on the winning team were tied into the program at the First Baptist Church of Westfield. In addition, two of the quizzers on the team that placed ninth overall competed under the First Baptist Church of Westfield program. The quizzers on the first place team were Timothy Frudd, Grace Heim, Jessica Link, Alyssa Maas and Mari Braun. Emma Heim and Naomi Fisher participated on Northeastern 2 and had fantastic rookie campaigns.

Each quizzer on the winning team scored in crucial moments. In the finals, each starter answered correct questions in the opening half of both quizzes which allowed them to establish a comfortable lead and they never looked back. Grace Heim had an outstanding final day, answering several questions correctly and was the catalyst the team needed to reach the finals. In the 2016-2017 campaign, Timothy Frudd capped off a brilliant quizzing career and finished in first place at both the local and district level for the third year in a row. 2017 was his sixth year attending the International tournament and he broke out at the International level and led his team to victory while also finishing first individually.

The 2017-2018 year will begin in late August with an area picnic at Presque Isle. The quizzers will be studying 1st and 2nd Corinthians during the next campaign. Feel free to contact Carl Swan at (814) 460-7040 or Ruth Frudd at 753-6510 with any questions or if there is any interest in participating.
