Dunkirk Senior Center

There will be a Dunkirk Seniors general membership meeting on Friday, May 19 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Dunkirk Senior Center, 45 Cliffstar Court. The event will include Center updates followed by a light lunch, snacks and beverages.

On Saturday, June 3 there will be a Mom & Pops barbecue dinner at the Senior Center. Doors open at 11:30 a.m., with dinner served at noon. The meal will be catered by Weidner Barbecue. The price is $10 per person with options to eat in or take out. The menu includes one-half barbecued chicken dinner with sides or one-quarter barbecued chicken, barbecued pulled pork on a kaiser roll and sides. Sides will be buttered potato spuds, coleslaw, roll and butter, dessert and a beverage. Music by Desperate Measures will provide musical entertainment. There will also be a 50/50 drawing. The event offers pre-sale tickets only and no refunds. The dinner is limited to the first 100 reservations.

There have been some revisions to the Dunkirk Senior Trips schedule.

On Monday, June 19: Customer Appreciation Trip to Buffalo Creek Casino ($40 bonus, no food allowance). Sign up begins Monday, May 8 at 9 a.m.

On Monday, July 3: Customer Appreciation Trip to Seneca Niagara, ($30 bonus and free buffet). Sign up begins Monday, May 15 at 9 a.m.

On Thursday, July 20: Presque Isle Casino Trip (Erie, Pennsylvania, $25 bonus, no food allowance). Sign up begins Tuesday, May 23 at 9 a.m.

On Monday, Aug. 14: Laura Roth Cabaret Show (Buffalo Polish Falcons, price includes buffet and show). Sign up begins Tuesday, June 6 at 9 a.m.

On Monday, Sept. 18: Customer Appreciation Trip to Buffalo Creek Casino ($40 bonus, no food allowance). Sign up begins Monday, Aug. 7 at 9 a.m.

On Wednesday, Sept. 27: Amish Brown Bag Trip (Middlefield, Amish Wedding dinner, various stops). Sign up begins Monday, June 12 at 9 a.m.

On Tuesday, Oct. 10: Customer Appreciation Trip to Seneca Allegany Casino, ($30 bonus and free buffet). Sign up begins Tuesday, Sept. 12 at 9 a.m.

On Tuesday, Oct. 24: Shea’s “The Bodyguard” dinner and show (dinner at Ilio DiPaolo’s 5:15 p.m., show 7:30 p.m.) Sign up begins Tuesday, May 9 at 9 a.m. pending availability few seats left.

On Monday, Nov. 6 to Tuesday, Nov. 7: Turning Stone Casino (one night, two days, stop at on way to del Lago Casino). Sign up begins Tuesday, July 11 at 9 a.m.

On Tuesday, Nov. 28: Customer Appreciation Trip to Seneca Allegany Casino, ($30 bonus and free buffet). Sign up begins Monday, Sept. 25 at 9 a.m.

Grape Belt Seniors

Find Grape Belt Seniors on Facebook. Learn about upcoming trips and events, as well as information regarding cancellations of Catherine’s aerobics and weights classes. She will also post cancellations on her own Facebook page, WDOE, and Chautauqua Today. The Facebook page is a closed group: one needs to be a member of Grape Belt Seniors to join the Facebook group.

Starting May 1, the Board will start collecting dues from new members as well as from current members who wish to renew their membership. The next luncheon will be held Friday, May 19. Those attending are asked to bring a dish to pass. Readers Theater: Schedule change for May only: Readers Theater will meet the second week of May. (May 10).

All trips, extended as well as day trips, are open to the public; members and non-members. Fliers for all of the upcoming trips for 2017 are available at the Center.

Casino trips include customer appreciation June 27 with payment due May 20; July 17 with payment due June 7 and Nov. 6 with payment due Oct. 1.

Casino with entertainment: Bill Haley & the Comets is June 6; Motown Sept.19 with payment due Aug. 8 and the Temptations Dec. 12 with payment due Nov. 5.

Day trips: Lilac Festival May 17 leaving at 8:15; Frank Lloyd Wright June 24 and 25 with payment due no later than May 10; Watkins Glen July 10 with payment due June 7; Niagara On The Lake Aug. 24 with payment due July 24 (need passport or enhanced licence) and Vineyard Express Oct. 15 with payment due Sept. 1.

Extended trips for 2017: Reservations for the Chicago trip Sept. 18 to 21 are still available. It will be by coach for four days and three nights and will include a tour of the University of Notre Dame; a guided city tour including Grant Park and Navy Pier; an architectural cruise along the Chicago River to visit the Biograph Theater, the Holy Name Cathedral, the Shedd Aquarium, the Field Museum, dinner theater at Tommy Gunn’s Dinner Theater, and much more.

Plans are being made for a trip to Hawaii early in 2018 and a Fall trip to Nova Scotia. The trip to Hawaii will be 10 days and nine nights, including a seven-night cruise to four of the islands. There are still reservations available for the Hawaii trip. The Nova Scotia trip will be eight days and seven nights with visits to many interesting sights. David Wendt will be at the Center on May 22 at 10:30 a.m. to discuss the upcoming extended trips.

United Senior Citizens

The United Senior Citizens will have their monthly luncheon at the Fredonia Beaver Club on Monday, May 8 at noon. The menu will be meatloaf, red-skin smashed potatoes, corn, fresh tossed salad with homemade dressing, and jello for dessert. Gluten free members will have grilled chicken.

Sheridan Happy Seniors

The Sheridan Happy Seniors met on Friday, April 21 at the Sheridan Hall.

They had pizza first, with a pineapple coffee cake made by Arlene Miller. The meeting included a complete review of the members from last year, their addresses and the phone numbers. The group present discussed future programs and possible speakers.

The meeting next month will be on Friday, May 12 at 1 p.m. at the hall on Route 20 in the Sheridan Senior Center.

Silver Creek Seniors

The last meeting of the month was on April 25. There were 26 in attendance, which also included Angie Logan from the Sheridan Happy Seniors.

President Ed Newman led the Pledge of Allegiance and “God Bless America.” Dorothy Miniri said the blessing before everyone sat down to a lunch of sandwiches, olives, pickles, chips and jello. A sloppy Joe lunch is planned for the next meeting on Tuesday, May 2.

Guest speakers Marv and Nancy Fry shared their memories of a trip to Iceland. Including the history of Iceland, there was a slide show of landscapes, and many other things about the customs of the people. There was a question and answer time which also added many interesting topics.

Lorraine Bailey spoke about the celebration of Earth Day on Saturday, April 22. However, any day is the day to protect and appreciate the bluest and most beautiful planet which we are fortunate to be able to call our home. We honor you, Mother Earth, by pledging to be good stewards, for the reason that, “This Land is Your Land, This Land is My Land.”

Lorrie Newman shared some quotes from many interesting people of the past. Knowing who actually said these quotes had everyone laughing!

Bingo winners were Mary Ann Seibert, Lorrie Newman, Bud Anger, Ellyn Sutehall, Joe Ark, Pat Smielinski and Janice Snyder, who won three times. Ed Newman called bingo.

Winners of the 50/50 were Mary Congdon, Joan Suski and Snyder. Door prizes went to Sue Duecker, Carl Mohart and Miniri.

The meeting closed with the Club’s song, “Young At Heart.” Several members played dominoes after the meeting.

A reminder: Wednesday, May 3, everyone is invited to the Mt. Carmel Social Club for some entertainment, which starts at noon.

Seniors 55 or older are invited to attend the meetings on Tuesdays at 1 p.m. Meetings are still being held at the Sheridan Senior Center.
