Mt. Carmel Senior Club

Submitted Photo Pictured are Mt. Carmel Seniors Carolyn Dorothy (left) and Ruth Dolce examining one of the mats the Mt. Carmel Senior Club members have made.

The first of two monthly meetings was initiated with a pledge to the flag by President Carm Tampio on Oct. 4.

The 30 attendees and guests were led in a special prayer by Club Chaplin Jeanette Mula for our sick members, recent hurricane victims and for the victims of the tragic terrorist killings which occurred in Los Vegas this month.

A short business meeting followed after which guest speaker Carm Wappman, representing St Rose of Lima Society, narrated examples of current activities in process to help needy families. Seniors were encouraged to support these activities by attending a fund-raising dinner. The benefit dinner was subsequently held and strongly supported by the seniors.

A second guest speaker, Mary Lou Bower, representing Charity Projects and assisted by club member Ruth Dolce, demonstrated the fabrication of sleeping mats for the homeless. The mats, measuring three by six feet, are made from scrap plastic materials primarily by senior volunteers.

Several seniors did in fact volunteer to crochet the mats. It is a win-win for all.

President Tampio announced that the club has been invited to participate in the Silver Creek Central School annual Thanksgiving luncheon to be held on Tuesday, Oct. 17 at noon at the high school. An attendance count has been forwarded to the school.

Refreshments were provided by members Jean Mc Danield, and Mary Congdon. Annual dues were collected by Virginia Chesbro due to the absence of Club Treasurer Melanie Bates who is visiting family in Paris, France.

The next regular meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 18 at noon, featuring a Harvest Dinner theme.
