Silver Creek Seniors

The March 13 meeting opened with the wearin’-of-the-green and shamrocks to commemorate St. Patrick’s Day. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and “God Bless America” was sung with sentiment. Chaplain Dorothy Miniri brought forward the blessings of thanks and special prayers for all those with us and those who are gone.

The ham and cabbage main meal on this special day was in a word, delicious; and included Copper Pennies (carrots), potatoes, Amish rolled butter, fresh fruits and sweet confections. Kudos to the cooks and the bakers.

The soothing strains of Irish memory songs were dedicated to our late Senior Center member Conrad Pawlak, who passed away this week. Connie loved to sing and we knew that he joined us as we shared the calming power of prayer, music and song. Dear Connie, God has blessed you and your amazing family. We will never forget your warm, winning and teaching ways.

The 50/50 winners were Shirley Sikorski, Miniri and Jean McDaneld. Door prizes were won by Lorraine Bailey, Sikorski and Sue Borowski. Ed Newman called mind-sharpening bingo and the winners were Harry Suski, Lorrie Newman twice, Eleanor Lemiszko, Joe Ark, Miniri, Jen Zlotnick, Jan Snyder and Thelma Hilliker.

A reminder is made to residents of the Silver Creek Central School District to vote March 20 from 1 to 9 p.m. in the school library on a proposed capital construction project need.

The Tuesday, March 20 meeting will be held at 1 p.m. at the Senior Club House on Route 5 in Silver Creek.

Sinclairville Senior Citizens

The St. Patrick’s luncheon and meeting for the Sinclairville Senior Citizens was recently held in the Sinclairville Fire Hall dining room. President Diman Smith welcomed all to the luncheon, and Cassadaga American Legion Chaplain Diane K. Shaw gave the blessing prior to the meal. The table decorations were provided and set up by Diman and LouAnn Smith. Thanks to these two for the colorful St. Patrick’s decorations. The main meal of corned beef and cabbage was provided by Treasurer Charles Sylvester. Mrs. Smith prepared the corned beef and cabbage using her special recipe and the meal was delicious and so very tender. The other members brought dishes of food and desserts to add to the meal. A fine meal with a large variety was enjoyed by all, and much appreciation is extended to Sylvester, and Mr. and Mrs. Smith for this main meal. Thanks to Smith for getting the coffee ready for today.

After the luncheon, guest Sheila Lawrence was the speaker. She is the district coordinator for the AARP Driver Safety Classes. She spoke about how the driving and the roads are different from when this group first began to drive. Rumble strips are one example, she said. She added that the program is about safety for the people. She spoke of two upcoming programs in our area, one at the South Stockton Wayside Chapel and one in Fredonia. The insurance reduction is good for three years.

Prizes were awarded by President Smith. Recipients included Mrs. Smith, Irene Moll, Paul Scranton, President Smith, Robert Minekime, Diane Minekime, Diane Shaw, and Louisa Smith.

Following the meal, the meeting opened with the Lord’s Prayer led by President Smith and the Pledge of Allegiance led by John Sipos. The minutes from the February meeting were read by secretary Sipos. Sylvester read the treasurer’s report. Sunshine Chairman Betty Wielgasz read the list of those who are celebrating birthdays. The birthday song was sung to Irene Moll and Linda Parmenter.

Sylvester talked about two upcoming bus tours with another senior group.

Smith, who is the commander of the Sons of the American Legion, said that a fundraiser walk-a-thon will be held on Saturday, April 21 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Smith had sign-up sponsor sheets, and the money goes to the VA health care.

Sipos told the story of the history of St. Patrick from the year he was born in 389 until he died in 461. St. Patrick’s day is the celebration of the day he died. He was a very religious person, and helped form churches and baptized many.

The next meeting of the group will be on Tuesday, April 10 at noon in the Sinclairville Fire Hall dining room. Parmenter and Wielgasz will provide the festive table decorations. The program will be the annual auction, with Smith as auctioneer. All those attending are encouraged to bring a dish of food to add to the meal or a dessert. New members are always welcome.
