Mayville Senior Citizens

Mayville Senior Citizens meeting held Dec. 6

The Mayville Senior Citizens enjoyed a lovely dinner consisting of a delicious ham baked by Janet Loomis and a variety of casseroles, salads, breads and desserts on Dec. 6. Following dinner, Bill Tornstrom, Program Director, introduced Doc Hamils, musician and writer from Ripley, who entertained the group with a variety of music and song!

Bonnie Johnson, President, began the meeting. Dianne Goodrich told a couple stories and a poem, followed by the Lord’s Prayer. The secretary and treasurer reports were read and accepted. Three thank you cards were read. Mary Carlson listed December birthdays, anniversaries and cards sent. The officers for next year were installed by Dianne Goodrich. The kitchen committee consisting of Louise Richir, Joyce Ayers and Dolly Gilbert was thanked. Also thank you to Sandy Wagner,Tornstom and Goodrich for candy gifts distributed to the group.

President Johnson stated a few changes for the group made at the executive board meeting. She also awarded the VFW a thank you gift for use of their facilities as well as a thank you to Nancy Peters for doing blood pressures for the group! $115 was collected to give to Office for the Aging to use toward the Senior Gift baskets. Door prizes were won by Nancy Peters, Christine Kroll, Jerry White, Carlson, Edna Brown and Laura Parment.

The next meeting will be held Jan. 3 at noon at the Mayville VFW. We will have a new entertainer, Robert Henry from Mayville. He will be playing and singing a mixture of folk and country songs for your listening pleasure. Let’s have a great turnout and a warm welcome from all our Mayville Senior Citizens.

Silver Creek Seniors

The Dec. 18 meeting of the Silver Creek Seniors opened with Christmas wishes for Peace on Earth and goodwill to all. President Ed Newman’s welcomed back to Helen and Bob Burt and Dorothy Miniri was met with a burst of applause.

New member Elaine Wojda of Irving was warmly welcomed into our club’s affectionate group. Sue Shiloh was all smiles as President Newman announced the arrival of her new granddaughter baby Evelina Rose. Congratulations Sue.

The pledge of allegiance was recited and “God Bless America” was sung with sincerity. Chaplain Miniri put forth blessings of gratitude for favors received, food prepared and the gifts of love and hope.

After a sumptuous Christmas luncheon of ham, potatoes, squash, beets, cinnamon apples, various salads and platters of Christmas cookies — thanks to the volunteers — the sunny day prompted members to go “Walking in a Winter Wonderland.”

Then, the group focused the memory songs on the true meaning of Christmas — the birth of baby Jesus with the singing of “Away in a Manger,” bringing “Joy to the World” — a world that still seeks wise men (and women) and more “Silent Nights.”

Gifts were opened with moments of child-like glee, all the while knowing that the greatest Christmas gifts are love and each other. Jan Snyder then gifted the club’s building with a welcome mat spelling out “COME IN — WE ARE AWESOME.”

If you are 55 or older, you can easily verify this welcome by joining the Silver Creek Senior Club!

This week’s winners: 50-50 — Helen Burt, Sue Borowski and Shiloh; door — Harry Suski, Bea Ortolano and Selma Hilliker.

President Newman called mind-sharpening Bingo and the winners were: Lorrie Newman, Kathy Huffman, Susan Shiloh, Pauline Flitt, Dorothy Miniri, Selma Hilliker, Mary Congdon and Sue Borowski.

Due to Christmas and New Year’s falling on Tuesdays, the next meeting will be Jan. 8 at the Silver Creek clubhouse. Pizza will be served. Happy New Year everyone.
