Waite family holds 137th annual reunion
The 137th Waite reunion was held Aug. 4 at Point Gratiot on the beautiful Lake Erie shores. Helen Burlett, President, called the meeting to order and welcomed all to the reunion. Bonnie Kemp gave the blessing for the luncheon as well as a memorial for family members who passed away in the 2017 and 2018 year. Memorials included Anna Carpenter Waite, Florence Meachum, Jack Lavern Feichter, and Aaron James Smith.
The business part of the meeting continued with Shelia Wassink, treasurer, giving the accounts and expenditures for the year. It was brought to the attention of members an article published in Chautauqua County Historical Society’s Spring 2018 Issue No.123 of “Time Lines” that this Waite line was connected to a Florilla Lorinda Todd Shaw Waite, a resident of Stockton who was secretary of the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union of Centralia as well as other social justice issues. Florilla married Noah Waite, a second husband, who served in the Civil War Union in New York’s Company E. in the 9th Cavalry Regiment. He survived imprisonment at the Andersonville and Libby Prisons. Together they had a son Frank and this line made great-grandsons, Walter A. Waite of Cassadaga and Lawrence Waite of Stockton, direct descendants of Florilla and Noah.
The meeting was officially closed. The 2019 reunion meeting place will be announced later, but the date will be Aug. 3, 2019.
