School 3 receives grant from National Grid

Dunkirk Elementary School 3 has had the privilege to receive a grant from the Hispanic Professional Association, a National Grid Employee Resource Group. This grant provides the opportunity for English Language Learning students and their parents to attend an after-school program that assists with homework, community interaction and literacy.

The goals of this program are to help parents understand daily homework, so that they can engage and assist in these assignments. The program also aims to help parents gain an understanding of their child’s educational needs. Enrollment is free and students from all the elementary schools in the district are invited to attend.

Additionally, this program allows parents to become familiar with the Common Core grade level content and provide bilingual resources to enhance learning at home.

According to one student, the program is “fun.” She added, “My favorite part is that my mom comes too.”

Other students say they enjoy getting homework help, learning English, and receiving extra time to practice reading and math.

One of the parents noted “I can learn English with my daughter. And I can learn to help her with her homework.”

Since the program started in September, enrollment has continued to increase. Sessions are held every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon until winter break.
