LAKEWOOD – Straight Fermentations recently opened its doors as the only homebrew and winemaking supply store in southern Chautauqua County.

Located at 104 Chautauqua Ave., Lakewood, Straight Fermentations offers all supplies needed for beginning to advanced brewers and winemakers. They have a large grain room with over 30 varieties of grain, over 30 varieties of hops and an extensive selection of beer and wine yeast. The store carries Brewers Best and Winexpert kits as well as all the equipment needed for brewing and winemaking. They also offer a wide variety of natural flavorings and soda flavorings. In addition to supplies and ingredients, the store offers a workspace to begin brewing and lessons for those just getting started in the practice.

Local proprietors John Straight, retired Fredonia schoolteacher, and Steve Spears, owner of Dunkirk Homebrew in Sheridan, invite the community to a grand opening this Friday and Saturday. A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held Friday at 3 p.m. Senator Catharine Young, Assemblyman Andrew Goodell, County Executive Vince Horrigan and other local dignitaries are scheduled to attend. The community is invited to tour the store and enjoy food, music and sale prices on both days. Signups for group classes will also be available.

“Collectively, Steve and I have been brewing for over 30 years. Steve has been operating the store in Sheridan since 2005,” said co-owner John Straight. “We both enjoy the camaraderie and community atmosphere in the homebrewing world and are looking forward to experiencing more of that here. We have already met some of the brewing and winemaking community surrounding Lakewood and we are looking forward to getting to know more people as we head into the fall wine and brewing season.”

Regular hours are Monday and Thursday-Saturday, noon to 6 p.m., or by appointment.
