Heritage Ministries teaming with Hearthstone Communities
Heritage Ministries David Smeltzer, president and chief executive officer of Heritage Ministries, announced that the Board of Directors of Hearthstone Communities of Woodstock, Ill., has entered into an affiliation agreement with Heritage Ministries.
Heritage Ministries was founded as the Orphanage and Homes of the Free Methodist Church in 1886. The organization focused its mission on elder care and housing with the elimination of the orphanage in 1965 due to changing regulations. Heritage has grown from its original campus in Gerry to six locations in New York state and one in the state of Washington, offering Independent Living, Assisted Living and Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation services. In addition to Hearthstone, recent affiliations with Heritage include Vinecroft Retirement Community in Clarence Center and The Kenney in Seattle.
Heritage and its affiliates provide independent and/or assisted living residences for seniors at The Homestead in Gerry, The Woodlands on Southwestern Drive in West Ellicott, Vinecroft in Clarence Center, Orchard Grove in West Ellicott, and The Kenney in Seattle. Rehabilitation and skilled nursing services are provided at The Village (Gerry, New York), The Park in Jamestown, The Green in Greenhurst and The Kenney (West Seattle, WA). Additionally, Heritage Living at the Chautauqua Mall in Lakewood serves the community by providing an easy-access location for area seniors, and their families, to get answers to questions about the evolving needs of seniors. With the addition of Hearthstone, Heritage Ministries serves more than 1,400 individuals annually with more than 1,200 employees throughout its network.
Smeltzer, commented that “this agreement will create economies of scale that improve operational efficiency, increase financial depth, and further Hearthstone’s access to capital markets in the competitive greater Chicago marketplace.”
Founded in 1886 as the Chicago Industrial Home for Children, Hearthstone Communities expanded its mission to seniors shortly thereafter. Today, Hearthstone provides health care and housing services to older adults as well as early learning and after school care services to children ages 6 months to 12 years on its 14 acre campus in Woodstock, Illinois. Senior independent living, assisted living, memory care, rehabilitation and long term care nursing are all provided on campus. Independent living options are available at Hearthstone at Serenity Creek, The Prairie Homes of Hearthstone, and The Garden Homes of Hearthstone. Children?s services are provided at the Hearthstone Early Learning Center.
Under this new agreement, Hearthstone maintains its identity and continues as a separate 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization. The current management team remains and the Board of Directors has been supplemented by several directors from the Heritage Ministries board. Terry Egan continues as chief executive officer of Hearthstone and David Smeltzer has been named President of Hearthstone.
Hearthstone and Heritage are both affiliated with the Free Methodist Church — USA and are members of the Association of Human Services Ministries of the Free Methodist Church — USA
“Among the many significant benefits of this affiliation,” according to Egan, “is the partnership with an organization that has financial strength and extensive expertise in both strategic planning and facilities enhancement. Most importantly, our residents and their families will benefit from the security of a financially strong retirement community that is committed to meeting their social, residential and spiritual needs now and into the future.”
