SUNY Fredonia Vice President Cedric Howard to receive national award
Each year, NASPA — Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education, recognizes members who are doing outstanding work in the student affairs profession. Cedric Howard, vice president for Enrollment and Student Services at the State University of New York at Fredonia, was selected as the recipient of the 2018 Scott Goodnight Award for Outstanding Performance as a Dean.
The award, named for NASPA’s founding chair of the board of directors (1919-1920) and former dean of men at the University of Wisconsin, is presented to a dean or senior student affairs officer who has demonstrated sustained professional achievement in student affairs work, innovative response in meeting students’ varied and emerging needs, effectiveness in developing staff, and leadership in community and college or university affairs. The award recipient must also have earned stature among and support of students, faculty, and fellow administrators on campus, and made significant contributions to the field through publications or involvement in professional associations.
Dr. Howard assumed his duties at Fredonia on Aug. 1, 2016. In his role, Dr. Howard has made fundamental changes to the enrollment and admissions procedures and workflow. His expertise, leadership and management style has contributed greatly in Fredonia enrolling the second largest first-year class in history, a 21 percent increase over the past two admissions cycles. In previous positions, Dr. Howard served as Vice Chancellor of Student and Enrollment Service at the University of Washington — Tacoma; Director of Student Affairs at the University of South Florida — St. Petersburg; Dean of Student Affairs and Chief Student Affairs Officer at LeMoyne-Owen College in Memphis, Tennessee; and Director of the Diversity Center and Student Programs at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah.
