Local gas prices continue to decrease

The national average price for regular unleaded gasoline went up one cent from last week to $2.28 per gallon, 58 cents more than a year ago. The New York State average is $2.48 per gallon, down one cent from last week. A year ago, the NYS average was $2.00.

AAA Western and Central New York reports the following averages:

¯ Buffalo – $2.44, down 1 cent

¯ Rochester – $2.39, down 2 cents

¯ Rome – $2.40, down 1 cent

¯ Syracuse – $2.32, down 2 cents

Pump prices have been pressured higher overall due to cuts in oil production globally, but increased U.S. production and low demand has led to a leveling out of prices over the last couple of weeks. The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s latest weekly estimates of U.S. gasoline demand show that January 2017 figures are down 6 percent from January 2016 and are at their lowest standing for the first month of the year since 2012.
