Cassadaga Job Corps announces information sessions, tours

Cassadaga Job Corps Academy will host tours and information sessions for interested applicants and their families today. They will start at 8:30 a.m. and again at 10 a.m. Cassadaga Job Corps Academy offers no-cost career training in the healthcare, construction and security industries as well as classes to prepare to take the TASC or obtain a high school diploma. Career training programs include carpentry, electrical, plumbing, painting, Certified Nurse Assistant and security. In addition, the Academy also offers a Job Corps Advanced Training program for LPN, in partnership with BOCES. In order to enroll in Job Corps, applicants must be 16-24 years old and meet income and other guidelines, as well as demonstrate readiness to embark on a rigorous and demanding training program. Job Corps will provide the courses described above, as well as a comprehensive career preparation curriculum to ensure graduates are ready to enter the labor market. Services for graduates include job placement assistance and transition money.

Special Portland meeting today

The town of Portland will hold a special meeting today, Oct. 5 at 2 p.m. at the Town Hall. The purpose of this meeting is to present the tentative budget 2018 and any other business that may come before the board.

Hurricane Maria relief

now collecting clothes

The Hurricane Maria relief collection for victims in Puerto Rico is now accepting gently used and new clothing after reports of a need for it. Please keep in mind that it is a tropical climate. Donations of water, canned food toiletries and baby items are also being accepted at the city of Dunkirk’s drop off at the warehouse on the corner of Washington Avenue and Lake Shore Drive from 3 to 7 p.m. every day. Monetary donations are also being accepting in the clerk’s office or the development department in the Stearns building. Donations will be accepted until at least Oct. 13. Any help is appreciated. Volunteers may still sign up in the clerk’s office.
