Fruit sale is under way
The annual fruit sale by the Dunkirk-Fredonia Rotary Club has begun. Residents will be able to choose from oranges, Empire apples, pears and grapefruit by the case or half-case. To order fruit, see a Dunkirk-Fredonia Rotarian. The club meets Thursdays at the Beaver Club in Fredonia at noon.
Also, those who would like to place an order, can call 366-3000, ext. 401. Pick-up for the fruit will be at the Walmart parking lot on April 14.
Mayor to give details regarding summer boat race
The City of Dunkirk will be the site for the upcoming “Race World Offshore Grand Prix” Aug. 17-19.
This event is often referred to as NASCAR on the water according to Race World Offshore. The event of powerboat racing features the speed, drama and color of its automotive cousin. Mayor Wilfred Rosas will hold an informative press conference today, March 8 at 4 p.m. in Dunkirk City Hall to further discuss this upcoming event to take place on Lake Erie in the City of Dunkirk.
Literacy Volunteers book sale extended to March 8-10
Due to last week’s storm, Literacy Volunteers have extended their book sale from today to March 10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 21 East Bookstore, 21 E. Second St., Dunkirk. Patrons are asked to use the Washington Avenue entrance. Paperbacks are 50 cents, hard covers $1 and children’s books are 25 cents. There are some specially-priced books. The public is invited to browse, take home some bargains and to assist the organization in the work of promoting literacy.
JCC’s ‘Speech and Debate’ rescheduled
Jamestown Community College’s production of “Speech and Debate” has been postponed until mid-April.
The play, originally scheduled for the Scharmann Theatre stage in March, will now be performed at 8 p.m. on April 13 and 14 and at 2 p.m. on April 15.
Adam Owens will direct the production, which focuses on three high school students who unravel a scandal involving their teacher.
Admission to the play is $10, adults; $8, senior citizens; and $5, JCC Faculty Student Association members and high school students. Tickets can be obtained by calling JCC’s box office, (716)338-1187.
Brocton Universal Pre-K and Kindergarten
Brocton Elementary School will issue registration packets for students eligible for the universal Pre-k and kindergarten classes for the 2018-19 school year on Monday through Thursday, March 29 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Along with the completed packets a copy of a birth certificate, documented immunization records, and proof of residency are required.
Individual kindergarten screening is May 21 and 23 and pre-kindergarten screening is June 6 and 7. You must schedule your screening time with the Elementary Office. To be eligible for Pre-K children must turn 4 on or before Dec. 1, 2018. To be eligible for kindergarten, children must turn 5 on or before Dec. 1, 2018. If there are questions, call 792-2100.
Town Board of
The Town Board of Hanover will be holding a meeting today at the Hanover Town Hall, at 2 p.m. with NYSEG and a meeting at 3 p.m. with NYSERDA to discuss street lighting.
Portland Board of Commissioners reschedules meeting
The March meeting of the Board of Commissioners of the Portland Fire District has been moved from Monday, March 12, to Thursday, March 15, beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Fire Hall. As with all meetings of the board, these are open to the public.
Citizens for a Better Cassadaga will meet Thursday
The Citizens for a Better Cassadaga will meet today at 7 p.m. at the Cassadaga Library, 18 Maple Ave. Plans for 2018 will be discussed. Input is needed. All are welcome.
Dunkirk Education Board to meet at
The Dunkirk Board of Education will hold the March workshop beginning at 5:30 p.m. today, in the cafeteria at the P-Tech Academy, 55 E. Benton Street, Dunkirk. The regular March Board of Education meeting will begin at 6:15 p.m. The workshop and regular meeting are open to the public.
Fredonia Village Board to meet March 14
The Fredonia Village Board will meet for a workshop and meeting on Monday, March 12, at the village hall. The workshop begins at 6:30 p.m. followed by the meeting at 7:30 p.m.
Town of Pomfret to meet March 14
The Pomfret Town Board will gather for its regular meeting on Wednesday, March 14, at 6:30 p.m. at the town hall., 9 Day Street. At 6:15 p.m., a public hearing will be held on a local law to amend certain sections of the Pomfret Zoning Law and Code.
