Community notebook — April 15

April is announced as Fredonia Grange month for 150th anniversary

Fredonia Mayor Athanasia Landis announced that the month of April 2018 will be proclaimed as Fredonia Grange No. 1 Month in the village. This month, and more specifically April 16, is the grange’s 150-year anniversary.

The National Grange of the Order of Patrons of Husbandry was organized on Dec. 4, 1867 by Oliver Hudson Kelly and a group of friends. It became the first nationwide farm organization and the first national organization to give full voice and vote to women, 60 years before women’s suffrage in the United States. Kelly came to Fredonia on April 16, 1868 and founded the Fredonia Grange No. 1, the first in the country.

The grange today is still alive and well as it serves the community with locally-oriented programs and activities.
