Road closed in Portland

Ellicott Road in the town of Portland will be closed to traffic from Ransom Road to Route 380 on Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., for resurfacing.

Pillar of Fire Fellowship indoor yard sale set for Friday, Saturday

The Pillar of Fire Fellowship, 221 Lake Shore Drive W., Dunkirk is having an indoor yard sale on Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. All proceeds will benefit the Joint Veteran’s Council. Raffle tickets will be sold for a fleece Marine Corps handmade blanket.

Help needed making turbans and pillows

The Circle of Love is in need of “sew at home” volunteers for turbans and comfort pillows. Volunteers can use their own fabric (soft to touch, colorful) or pick material up from the coordinator. The pillows are 8 by 16, folded in half and sewn on two sides. For those interested and who have the time, call Josie Costa Christopher at home 366-0698 or at the Care Center at 366-1616 and leave a message.

Need Garden Help?

The Chautauqua Country Master Gardeners of the Cornell Cooperative Extension offers free gardening advice to the public weekly until the end of September. Also, PH soil tests are available. Contact the gardeners Wednesdays from noon to 2 p.m. except holidays at 664-9502 ext. 224, or walk in at the Frank W. Bratt AG Center at 3542 Turner Road, Jamestown. “Cornell Cooperative Extension…we put research-based knowledge to work for you.”

Murray Hose Company No. 4 to meet Sept. 10

Murray Hose Company No. 4, which usually meets the first Monday of the month, will meet instead this month on Sept. 10, due to the Labor Day holiday. Members will meet at 7 p.m. at 104 W. Doughty St., Dunkirk. Several agenda items will be discussed.

Ripley Public Library Fundraiser Vendor Fair set for Sept. 15

The Noble Winery and the Ripley Public Library will host a Vendor Fair on Saturday, Sept. 15 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. All crafters, artists, and direct sales are welcome. Tables are not provided. No electricity will be provided. Areas are 10′ x 12′. No pets are allowed.

The event will take place rain or shine at the Noble Winery, 8630 Hardscrabble Road, Westfield. The cost is $20 per table, and a donation of at least one item for a Chinese auction.

Organizers reserve the right to reject any application. Proceeds from the event support the library building fund.

South Dayton American Legion Post No. 1593 fund-raiser dinner set for Thursday

South Dayton American Legion Post No. 1593 will hold a fund-raiser dinner on Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Post, 4 Mill St. The cost is $8 for a liver and onions dinner with sides or homemade mac-n-cheese with a deluxe hot dog on bun. Both dinners include salad and dessert. All proceeds benefit Post No. 1593.

On Sept. 8, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. you will be able to tour five fantastic Dunkirk Homes. Tickets will be $20 with all proceeds benefitting the Dunkirk Historical Museum located at 513 Washington Ave.

Tickets may be purchased at the following locations: Dunkirk Free Library at 536 Central Ave., P & G Foods at 411 Central Ave., One Stop Big Rick’s Food Mart & Deli at 327 Lake Shore Drive East and the Dunkirk Historical Museum at 513 Washington Ave.

Please note that if you are a member of the Historical Society, you are entitled to a $5 discount, but you must purchase the ticket at the Museum. No tickets will be sold at the houses on the day of the tour.

Lakeshore Humane Society holds Pet Adoption Day Sept. 8

The Lakeshore Humane Society will hold a Pet Adoption Day/Open House at its Adoption Center on Saturday, Sept. 8 from 12 to 4 p.m. The center is located at 431 E. Chestnut St., Dunkirk. Come to see the facility, and meet some of the dogs and cats who need caring homes.

If unable to come to an Adoption Day, call 672-1991 to arrange an appointment to see the dogs and cats awaiting adoption. (One must be 21 years of age or older to adopt a pet.) Also, LHS will hold an “Adoption Evening” on Wednesday, Sept. 12 from 6 to 8 p.m.
