Dunkirk School 5 PTO presents: Community Yard Sale and kids’ carnival Saturday

Dunkirk School 5 PTO will hold a Community Yard Sale and kids’ carnival on the school grounds at 117 Brigham Road on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Some of the attractions include carnival games, prizes and a bounce house. Games and bounce house tickets will be on sale for 25 cents each or 5 for $1. Games and bounce house costs will be between 1 and 4 tickets. Other event features include snow cones, a bake sale and a basket raffle. A hot dog lunch of a hot dog, chips and a water will be available for $2. There will also be a chance to pie the principal and maybe a favorite teacher.

Chautauqua Opportunities Alzheimer’s Services support group to meet Tuesday

Chautauqua Opportunities Alzheimer’s Services holds support group meetings at the Dunkirk Library the first Tuesday of the month from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The next one is this Tuesday. The group is designed for those currently caring for an older relative, spouse, or family member. Come to a support group for dementia care partners. There is the opportunity to discuss ideas, gain insight, offer support, share coping tips, receive resources and share stories. This group is supported in part by a grant from the NYS Department of Health. Subsequent meetings will take place Nov. 6 and Dec. 4. For more information, call 366-3335 ext. 1236.

Willowbrook Park Cemetery annual

meeting

The annual meeting of Willowbrook Park Cemetery, Central Avenue, Dunkirk, will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 16 at 10:30 a.m. in the cemetery chapel. All plot and columbarium niche owners may attend.

Ladies Auxiliary of Westfield Legion Post 327 chili/soup cook-off

The Ladies Auxiliary of Westfield Legion Post 327 is holding its second annual chili/soup cook-off on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will be held at Cross Roads Market, 6017 Sherman-Westfield Road, Westfield in the pavilion. There will be prizes, a Chinese auction, 50/50 and a bake sale.

Anyone interested in entering a soup/chili or items for the auction is asked to contact Blanche at 269-9024 or Amanda or Kaleigh at 326-3210.

There is no charge to enter, and the competition is open to those who have not had the opportunity to pre-register as well.

Fight the common cold course offered

Herbs and plants that can fight the common cold and flu will be examined in a non-credit course on Wednesday at Jamestown Community College’s North County Center in Dunkirk.

Cold and Flu Care With Western New York Plants meets from 6:30-8:30 p.m. The registration fee is $49. To register, call 363.6500.

Studies and tradition have shown that herbs like elderberry, echinacea, boneset, thyme and others can help with cold and flu prevention and/or reduce the severity and duration of sickness.

Participants will learn to identify or cultivate medicinal plants and how to safely and effectively use them for a healthy winter season.

Samples and recipes will be offered, and each participant will receive a bag of dried elderberries for preparing their own tea or elderberry syrup at home.

Valley Historical Society meeting and program set for Tuesday

The next Valley Historical Society meeting will be held this Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Sinclairville Library, 15 Main St., Sinclairville. The program presenter will be Gretchen Palmieri. She will present “History of the Town of Ellery, Ellery Cow, and the Lown Family.” Anyone interested in local history is invited to attend. Refreshments will be served after the meeting.

J. Carter Knapp Post 953 Forestville American Legion plans steak, ham, turkey party

J. Carter Knapp Post 953 Forestville American Legion, 6 Cedar St., Forestville will hold a steak, ham and turkey party on Saturday, beginning at 7 p.m.

The evening will include a Chinese auction, 50/50 raffle, ticket drawings for $100, $50, $25 and $20. Food and beverages will be provided. Admission is free. Everyone is welcomed.

Post 62 plans line dancing classes

New beginner line dance class starting today at 6 p.m. at Dunkirk Memorial American Legion Post 62, 211 Central Ave. Learn the basic steps and put them to music and dance within 10 minutes. This is a great way to make new brain pathways and to exercise at the same time. Dance to all types of music, from country to classic to pop tunes. Wear comfortable shoes or boots that will slide on the floor. Lessons will be held from 6 to 7:30 pm. every Monday.

Advanced beginner line dance lessons are held every Tuesday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. followed by Intermediate advanced line dance lessons from 7:30 to 9 p.m. A donation of $5 is needed for each class. For more information, call Connie at 673-1438.
