County DMV offers renewals by phone

Chautauqua County residents will be able to quickly renew registrations and support the local Department of Motor Vehicle offices at the same time, according to Chautauqua County Clerk Larry Barmore.

Residents may now call the local DMV office to renew registrations on cars, trucks and trailers, saving a trip to the DMV office while receiving a quicker turnaround and more personal service than renewing online.

Barmore has announced this new service will be more convenient to residents and also help the DMV offices by reducing foot traffic. In addition, renewing by telephone will also help county residents by keeping their money local and reducing the tax burden.

“When residents use the online service, not only does it take revenue away from our county, but there’s also no one to turn to if there’s a problem with the transaction. Our office gets calls and visits regularly from residents who renewed online and then didn’t receive their registration in the mail or the registration didn’t arrive before the old one expired so they had to visit the office anyway for a duplicate. Dealing with those issues takes our staff away from helping other customers and we don’t receive any revenue for the time spent dealing with these state problems,” said Barmore. “By offering telephone service, we can quickly help more customers, our representatives can handle the transactions immediately and get the new registration in the mail within a day, customers will get to speak to a live person, and the county gets to keep our full share of the transaction so we’re compensated for the time being spent assisting the customer.”

Barmore also noted this new service will be especially helpful as winter approaches and driving can be hazardous. People can now renew from the comfort of their homes even if they don’t have a computer.

When a car, truck or trailer renewal is received in the mail, a phone call to the county renewal number will make the process of renewal very easy. All that is required is a credit card for payment. The registration renewal will be mailed to the home in a matter of days.

Residents should call 753-4229 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, to take advantage of this new service.

Barmore said that those who prefer to pay by check can still mail the renewal to the DMV at 7 N. Erie St., Mayville, NY 14757 and keep their money local.
