Village of Sherman’s fate to be decided Dec. 20

SHERMAN — Village of Sherman voters will decide on Tuesday, Dec. 20 whether the village should be dissolved. However, trustees recently decided that more information should be made available to the public.

Village Clerk Jeanette Ramm told board members that the county Board of Elections approved Tuesday  as the date for the referendum vote. The board decided that the election should be held at the fire hall from noon until 9 p.m.

Sherman resident Jim Van Volkenburg voiced his opinion that the board should conduct an informational meeting before the vote.

“You can’t make an informed vote if you don’t know what’s going to happen afterward,” he said.

Trustees agreed that it is necessary for the residents to be better informed before casting their votes; however, there was a difference of opinion about how the information should be presented to the community.

Village Trustee Mary Reyda said, “We owe our people an explanation. They need to know what they’re voting for or against.”

After extensive discussion about who would be best qualified to answer questions, the board agreed to invite Division of Local Government, Land Use Training Specialist Christopher Grant, to conduct an informational meeting.

Village Attorney Todd Thomas told trustees that the referendum will simply ask, “Shall the Village of Sherman be dissolved?” and voters will indicate a yes or no decision.

Ramm told trustees she has started the application for an expedited grant to help defray the costs of the dissolution study and the special referendum vote.
