Water customers asked to keep an open eye for leaks

BROCTON — While snow has now blanketed the ground across western New York, residents in the Town of Portland water districts are being asked to keep an eye open for excess ground water or discrepancies in average billing totals to avoid water waste.

Town Water Supervisor Drew Smith reported to council members during their monthly meeting about a sizeable leak that was caught on town property that led to a repair. Although snow covered the bare ground at the site of the leak, Smith explained the excess water was still visible across the snow and a closer inspection led to discovering the leak.

“I would say just always keep an eye out for excess water anywhere on your property, and if something doesn’t look right to you, report it,” Smith said.

Town Supervisor Dan Schrantz also reminds water customers across the Portland districts to not only keep a vigilant eye out for water ponding in all weather conditions, but to also compare average billing for water service, that may indicate a water leak on the premises.

In other matters, the town supervisor also reported on a grant opportunity for consolidation of services for water billing and maintenance across the municipalities involved with the regional water project. Schrantz reported that approximately $70,000 could be utilized for leak detection to eliminate water loss. Other goals of the grant award would be to map the infrastructure of the water district to cut down on repair time, staff training for billing software, and software that would effectively streamline the billing process. Ongoing meetings are taking place among the municipalities about the grant opportunity and more details will be announced as they’re made available.

Town leaders will reconvene today at 3:30 from Town Hall for their year-end fiscal meeting.
