Dunkirk fire displaces 8

A total of eight residents were displaced by a fire after an apartment house was damaged early Thursday morning.

According to the Dunkirk Fire Department, at 4:13 a.m., firefighters responded to a report of a fire in a structure at 133 Lake Shore Drive E. It was reported that residents were evacuating the house, but one tenant may have been entrapped in an apartment.

Upon arrival, crews entered to find a fire on the first floor extending to the second floor of a multiple residence. A search found that all tenants had safely escaped the fire. The fire was extinguished and confined to a first-floor bedroom and second-floor hallway with smoke damage throughout the structure.

The Fredonia and East Dunkirk fire departments and Alstar Ambulance assisted with stand-bys. The Chautauqua County Fire Police Team assisted with traffic.

The Red Cross is assisting the residents.

The fire is under investigation.
