Dunkirk Schools land second $250K bilingual grant

The Dunkirk City School District has doubled its amount of state grant money procured for bilingual education in the past year.

Superintendent Dr. James Tracy and English as a Second Language Director Constance Meginnis reported at a recent board of education meeting that the district has been awarded $250,000, adding to a $250,000 grant secured last summer for kindergarten students. Like the first grant, this latest grant will be disbursed evenly over a period of five years.

“It really mirrors almost identical to the kindergarten grant, so that should really help us start up and improve the program,” Meginnis remarked.

Tracy noted the kindergarten program is up and running and doing well. He added the district is trying to work on a program for the sixth grade, but it is difficult because of the lack of bilingual educators in the state.

“We’re already offering it now (in the sixth grade) … the students in the classroom really are very responsive and enjoy the classroom,” Meginnis pointed out. “Right now, if we were to meet state CR-154 regulations, we would need a classroom in kindergarten through 10th grade, so starting out and going through our phases … I’m looking forward to that continuing.”

Also during the meeting, Board President David Damico and Buildings and Grounds Director Timothy Abbey reported the district fleet of vehicles now uses WEX cards, thus allowing them to fuel up at local gas stations.
