Anonymous resident leaves note complaining about snowmobiles
CASSADAGA — An anonymous Cassadaga resident is seemingly unhappy with the snowmobiling practices in the village.
Earlier this month, an unknown person took it upon him/herself to put a local law in a snowmobiler’s mailbox regarding snowmobiling laws and regulations. It’s unknown how it ended up at the post office, which turned it over to the village board, with the warning that while whatever the winter riders do may be illegal, it is also illegal to stick un-postmarked mail in a person’s mailbox.
The recipient of the print-out is, indeed, a snowmobiling fan, and trustee Bill Astry says that local snowmobilers ride all over town, regardless of whether or not they’re allowed to ride in certain areas.
“They ride them out across Dale Drive, and … across the Lily Dale field,” said Astry.
The board tried justifying the mailer’s intentions — it may have been someone leaving it in the mailbox for someone else to pick up, or even a member of the snowmobiling community that doesn’t want the fun to be ruined for everyone else.
“It could be somebody that belongs to the snowmobile community, a local person that rides, that sees that they’re abusing (the privilege) … because it’ll be taken away. People will take away the rights to (snowmobile),” said meeting attendee Mary Jo Bauer.
Trustee Amanda Kalfas noted, “We would like to encourage all the snowmobilers to obey local laws and not ruin it for the rest of the people who enjoy (snowmobiling).”
For now, snowmobiling seems to be a dead issue. The trails were open on Friday but have closed since then because of the lack of snow. The current forecast does not show enough snow for snowmobiling in the immediate future.
