New letters: DLDC could become the DIDA

The Dunkirk Local Development Corporation will make way for a new economic organization in the city of Dunkirk.

Mayor Willie Rosas recently commented about plans for the DLDC, which has not met or functioned in several years.

Fourth Ward Councilwoman Stacy Szukala was not alone in wondering if there are plans to dissolve the DLDC.

“We are in that process,” Rosas responded at a recent Common Council meeting. “We are working with our attorney doing that now. Our planning director and our attorney have been directed by me to take the lead on this. We are still in the initial process, but we will be trying to complete that as soon as possible.”

While Rosas said he plans to get rid of the DLDC, the void would be filled with a previously defunct organization — the Dunkirk Industrial Development Agency.

“We are looking into reactivating the DIDA. Once we do that we will be looking to use that as a tool for development and then we will not be using the DLDC. But, as I said, we are in the beginning stages of that process. We are not sure how long that will take to come into fruition,” Rosas told the OBSERVER.

The DLDC owns waterfront and industrial properties within the city for the purpose of redevelopment. The organization has not been active and at a meeting last year it was suggested the organization dissolve due to past issues under investigation by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
