FALCONER — Demolition work began Thursday evening at the site where a blaze destroyed a residential and commercial building on West Main Street in Falconer.

Two excavators from Signature Excavating spent the evening tearing down remnants of the buildings. Members of the Falconer Fire Department were also onhand as the excavators began the cleanup.

On March 22, a fire ripped through the building, located at 29-31, 33-43 W. Main St. Fire departments throughout the area responded that morning after a resident reported seeing smoke coming from the third floor.

A cause of the fire has yet to be determined. Route 394 in Falconer from Phetteplace Street to Work Street remains closed.

The American Red Cross assisted 19 people who were affected by the fire. While much of the fire damage occurred in the upper residential area of the building, businesses at the ground level sustained heavy water damage.
