Village of Silver Creek announces event dates for spring, summer

SILVER CREEK — Silver Creek is a little village with a lot of activity, as residents and visitors know. At a recent village board meeting, municipal leaders told residents to mark their calendars for some very important festivities!

First came April announcements.

“(As mayor) … I proclaim April, 2017 as the Month of the Young Child,” Piccolo stated, and added that while young children need plenty of guidance and attention at all times, April is a month set aside to focus on educational programming for — and the mental, emotional and physical needs of — young children.

April is also Earth Month, and members of Girl Scout Troop 20098 in Silver Creek are honoring the planet with a “Celebration of Earth” and clean-up day April 21 (weather permitting). Troop leaders attended the village board meeting to invite officials to join in that Friday, saying that the Girl Scouts and a local Daisy Troop will walk from the school to the village park at about 3:30 p.m. They will pick up litter and debris, and finish the afternoon with their celebration at about 4:30 p.m. Piccolo offered to have trash receptacles placed around the park, so the kids will have an easier time making their little corner of this earth a cleaner place to live, work and play.

On May 13, resident Nick Coggins will receive Eagle Scout rank in a ceremony that will likely be held at the VFW. Piccolo and the village trustees expressed their congratulations to Coggins for his accomplishment, saying that Eagle Scouts must work for about a decade to attain the honor of the title.

In August, the Hanover Chamber of Commerce will once again hold its annual area yard sale, encompassing the village and its surrounding neighborhoods, on Aug. 5 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“All (sellers) within the village are required to purchase a $10 permit as a fundraiser to the Chamber with any profits to be invested back into the community,” Piccolo read. “The rest rooms in the ball park pavilion (will) also be available during the sale hours.”

And, the dates everyone has been waiting for: The 2017 Festival of Grapes will be held Sept. 9 to 17 in the village square, pavilion and ballpark.

“The parade … will be held on Sunday, Sept. 17,” Piccolo stated.

This year marks the Festival’s 50th anniversary, and the committee has big plans. If residents have far-flung family and friends who are proud SC alumni, here is their opportunity for a memorable hometown visit! Expect new and “retro” activities, as well as all the favorites: carnival rides, taffy, live music, cotton candy, the beer and wine tent, fried dough, sidewalk sales, games, arts and crafts vendors and a whole lot more!
