Elementary assessments give answers and questions

GOWANDA — Paula Troutman, Gowanda’s director of curriculum, recently gave the Gowanda Board of Education data on her 2015-16 Math iReady results and compared them to 2016-17. The findings were difficult to draw conclusions with due to many things to take account for.

Last school year’s chart detailed statistics from grades 3-8 and found the percentage of students who were on grade level for math in the fall and then in the spring, as well as statistics on students who made progressions after a year in the class and those students who are on or above grade level who are in the late progression category.

In the compared chart is the data to-date for this year. This year’s numbers included second grade, as well, the students’ percentage of being on grade level in the fall and the students being on percentage in the winter.

In the fall of last year, students who were on grade level spanned from 18 to 32 percent; 18 was third grade and 32 was fourth. The percentage of students on grade level is 25.1. While this year’s percentages spanned from 6 to 28 percent, the average was 17.1. Removing the caveat of the second grade (which was not in the previous year), the average is 19 and the span is 12 to 28. The dip is still six points.

Troutman noted during the meeting that the fall statistics of this year could be due to students forgetting information over the summer.

On the positive side, there was a jump for many students in this year’s results from the fall to the winter (a category that is not included in 2015-16’s test, as it skipped from fall to spring). The biggest leaps include second grade, from 6 to 37, third grade, 12 to 47, and fifth grade, 21 to 51.

The percentage of students this year who are on grade level in the winter look to progress like spring of last year.

The average gain from the fall to the spring per student was 23 points. However, the findings on students who progressed over the year aren’t as positive.

The highest grade to have a student make growth in results was fourth, with 73 percent. The rest are as follows: 53 percent for third grade, 43 for fifth, 68 for sixth, 63 for seventh and 60 for eighth.

The iReady results for math will be updated once they are presented.
